Scope and content:

The letters in this collection were written to John Lloyd Stearns by various family members and friends between 1864 and 1888. They span his lifetime from age 13 to age 36, and primarily reflect the family's day-to-day economic concerns, their relationships with each other and with extended family members, their travels, their living conditions and their work situations. Also included in the collection are miscellaneous papers of Robert Lawrence Stearns, John's younger brother.

Biographical / historical:

John Lloyd Stearns (sometimes referred to in the letters as "Johnnie" or "Johnny") was born December 20, 1852 in Brooklyn, New York, to the Rev. John Lloyd Stearns (born October 14, 1812) and his wife, Anne H. Stearns. Rev. Stearns died on November 11, 1864, survived by Anne and his four children, of which John was the second. John attended Burlington College in Burlington, New Jersey (a private secondary school for boys) from 1864 until the end of 1869. He worked for the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York from 1870 on, eventually as an agent. On October 3, 1878, he married Ella Powell (born July 2, 1856), daughter and oldest child of Cuthbert and Mary Sayre Powell of Alexandria, Virginia. They had 6 children, of whom three (John, born May 15, 1881; Harriotte Lee ("Hattie"), born February 4, 1884; and Cuthbert Powell, born August 14, 1885) made their appearance during the time period covered by the letters. In 1885, John Lloyd Stearns moved his family to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he set up his own insurance agency. The letters end in June 1888, the month during which his younger brother and his mother died.

ANNE HARRIOTTE LLOYD STEARNS ("A. H. Stearns" or "Anne H. Stearns" or "Nannie Stearns"). Born January 7, 1826 in Alexandria, Virginia, to John Lloyd and his second wife, Anne Harriot Lee Lloyd. Married the Rev. John Stearns on July 19, 1848. Died June 23, 1888. Mother of John Lloyd Stearns.

MARY BARLOW STEARNS (HOGE) ("Marrie" or "Marie"). Born November 29, 1850. Attended St. Mary's Hall in Burlington, New Jersey until 1869. Married William S. Hoge of Washington, D. C. in 1873 or 1874, and had five children: Nannie, Rachel, Willie, Philip (born 1884) and Mary Barlow (born 1887). Older sister of John Lloyd Stearns.

REBECCA LLOYD STEARNS (HASTINGS) ("Reca"). Born June 7, 1856 in Stratford, Connecticut. Attended St. Mary's Hall in Burlington, New Jersey. Married William S. Hastings of Elizabeth, New Jersey in October 1885: son Lawrence born February 23, 1887. Younger sister of John Lloyd Stearns.

ROBERT LAWRENCE STEARNS ("Lolly" or "Lol"). Born December 24, 1858 in Alexandria, Virginia. Attended St. Paul's School (a secondary school for boys) in Concord, New Hampshire. Worked for the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York in the Bureau of Accounts and Audit. Died unmarried on June 11, 1888, due to illness, in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Youngest brother of John Lloyd Stearns. Other Correspondents.

JEAN CHARLOTTE WASHINGTON LLOYD (YEATMAN) ("Aunt Jeannie" or "Aunt Jennie"). Married Captain Philip Tabb Yeatman ("Uncle Philip Yeatman" or "Captain Yeatman") in June 1867. After her marriage, may have resided in Baltimore at 50 Saratoga Street. Younger sister of Anne H. Stearns.

JOHN JANNEY LLOYD ("Uncle John"). Born March 8, 1800 to John and Rebecca Lloyd. Married Eliza Armistead Selden in 1845 and had 8 children. Died in 1871. Older half-brother to Anne H. Stearns.

MARY LEE LLOYD ("Aunt Minnie"). Youngest child of John and Anne Lloyd (birthdate unknown) and youngest sister of Anne H. Stearns.

REBECCA LLOYD (TABB) ("Aunt Rebecca"). Born June 7, 1824 to John and Anne Lloyd. BURLINGTON. Site of Burlington College (a secondary school for boys) and St. Mary's Hall (a secondary school for girls). John Lloyd Stearns and both of his sisters attended school in Burlington.

SPOTSWOOD. Home of Rev. John Stearns and his family prior to his death in November of 1864, and also his grave site. After his death, his parish was given to a Mr. Stewart, whose wife is known in the letters as "Aunt Hannah" and whose daughter is referred to as "Cousin Mary Stewart," although the relationship to the Stearns family is not clear. The Stearns family continued to live in Spotswood, renting various houses (primarily during the summer months) until 1872, when they managed to buy a home in Elizabeth. Elsewhere.
