The collection consists of the research materials used by Dr. Lynch in writing The Custis Chronicles. Materials include correspondence; copies of wills, inventories and other documents; and articles and other publications about the Custis family.
- Biographical / historical:

Dr. James B. Lynch was a professor of art history at the University of Maryland. After his retirement, he spent several years researching the history of the Custis family in Europe and America. He authored a two-volume work on the family: The Custis Chronicles: The Years of Migration (published 1993) and The Custis Chronicles: The Virginia Generations (published 1997).
