The collection consists of financial records, such as account books from the 1800s; dividend payments; income tax returns from 1919-1928; company records and reports; an employee records book from the 1920s-1940; letters of correspondence; company histories; franchise map; and newsclippings from various newspapers in 1956-1957. Of particular interest are the 1867 property book and the book containing the "Copies of Deeds, Agreements, & Contracts" from 1853-1892. Both contain drawings and diagrams of where water pipes had been laid in Old Town.

Highlights of this collection include material concerning the Washington and Lee Journalism Department, including course material, student papers, and lecture notes. Supplementing this course material are published materials on the history of film, 20th century war propaganda, the Nazification of Germany, Paris in the 1920's and the "Lost Generation." There also includes wide selections of personal research materials for projects such as Riegel's books Mobilizing for Chaos and Crown of Glory; collections on Riegel's travels to Central and South America and Europe including Germany during the 1930s, and the typescript of his unpublished autobigraphy to 1945 titled "Hacking It."

The Virginia Liaison Office records, 1989-1993, are housed in 10 boxes. The collection includes briefings, budgets, correspondence, legislation, reports, studies and weekly reports. Issues of concern to the Virginia Liaison Office during the Wilder Administration include: Air and Space Museum, Defense Conversion, Health Care, Mandates, Medicare and Medicaid, Military Base Closures, Transportation Projects, Welfare Reform and Workforce Development.

Papers, 1960-2015, of William C. Wooldridge of Suffolk, Virginia, consisting of articles, Bible records, books, brochures, census records, correspondence, court records, death records, deeds, ephemera, genealogical notes, interviews, marriage records, military records, obituaries, pamphlets, photographs, wills, and other papers compiled by Laurence B. Gardiner (1906-1994) and Wooldridge chronicling the genealogy of the descendants of John Wooldridge (ca. 1678-1757) of Henrico and Chesterfield Counties, Virginia. Collection includes books written by various members of the Wooldridge family on various topics, including William C. Wooldridge's The Wooldridge Family (2 volumes), and ephemera relating to members of the Wooldridge family and their business interests.

Records, 1859-1996 (bulk 1861-1864, 1905-1918), of the Dept. of Confederate Military Records. The bulk of the collection covers the years 1861 to 1864, 1884, 1900, and 1905 to 1918. Includes correspondence, muster rolls, payrolls, clippings, descriptive rolls of pay and clothing, powers of attorney, rosters, printed material, scrapbooks, letter books, general and special orders, certificates, photographs, and other sundry items.

Papers, 1988-1997, of L. F. Payne, Jr. (b. 1945) of Nelson County, Virginia, while he represented Virginia's Fifth District in the United States House of Representatives. Payne was also the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor of Virginia in 1997. Includes legislative files, Democratic Study Group Legislative Reports and House Action Reports, project files, press files, general office files, campaign files, and special media.

Contains files which document the functions of the Virginia Liaison Office (VLO) in Washington, D.C. Files include testimonies of Virginia officials before the federal government, and cover topics such as Medicaid, the devolution of the Employment Security System, and education policy. Also included are briefing packets from all meetings of the National Governors' Association attended by Governor Allen and/or members of the Liaison Office.
