Young Family Papers, 1788-1916

Abstract Or Scope

Papers, 1788-1916, of the Young family of Spotsylvania County, and Norfolk, Virginia, consisting mainly of the papers of Charles Young (d. 1804), his wife Mary Smith Young (1773-1855), their son, Charles Ogilvie Young (d. 1867), and his son Thomas Smith Young (1831-1916). Papers consist of accounts, bills of sale, deeds, depositions, inventories, judicial records, letters, lists, plats, powers of attorney, promissory notes, receipts, surveys, and tax receipts. Some of the papers deal with the estate of Charles Young and includes correspondence from William Wirt (1772-1834); others deal with Charles O. Young purchasing lands from the heirs of Edward G. Hill. There are several receipts to Thomas S. Young for the purchase of fertilizers and supplies. Also includes an account book, 1828-1857, of Katherine Sale (d. 1857) of Spotsylvania County.

Small-size tourist photo album with 50 b&w photographs, depicting various locations the Young family visited on their travels through Germany and France. Includes images of the Rhine, as well as Strasbourg, Cologne, and Leipzig, where the Youngs visited relatives. Nine images are of Hitler's re-militarization of Cologne in early March. One image depicts a large Nazi flag hung from an upper floor window in support of the regime.

This collection contains one ledger with a printed constitution of the Young Men's Christian Association (Y.M.C.A.) of Alexandria, Virginia. The ledger contains 21 filled out pages. The first two pages contain lists of members for 1865 and 1866, followed by a four page "Treasurers list" recording members and dues paid between 1866 and 1871. The rest of the ledger contains 15 pages of accounts documenting the operation of the association between 1866 and 1872. Incomes listed include dues and fees collected, donations given, and proceeds from lectures by local scholars, including one by "Dr. Bagby, likely noted Virginia State Librarian(1828-1883)who was an American Physician and Humorist. He wrote for the "Southern Literary Messenger" and the "Charleston Mercury" where he used his southern humor and local dialect. Expenses listed include money appropriated for a "Suburban Prayer Meeting," the outfitting of a library, printers' fees, room rentals, expenses related to a "Moonlight Excursion", subscriptions to the national YMCA newsletter, and more.
