Special Collections is located in Carol M. Newman Library at Virginia Tech. Special Collections includes manuscript collections, rare books, and the University Archives, as well as state, local and historical maps and photographs. William H. Byrne VPI Cadet Cape, 1914

3.1 Cubic Feet 1 box
The Cadet cape is navy blue with a red lining, made of wool and possibly wool felt. It is a long standard cape for the time, with a black cord closure that is missing a frog on the right side. There is a label on the inside that reads "Mr. Byrne Capt. (?), measure 49-38-15, date 10-23-14 (William Hale Byrne, class of 1915, East Falls Church, Fairfax)." An additional label states the manufacturer as " Blacksburg: Virginia Polytechnic Institute, J.H. Kelsey, Supt., Uniform Department." There are two hooks that hold the collar in place as well as three buttons on the underside of the cape like collar.

William Q. Thomson Day Book, 1845/1891

This collection is a ledger or day book used by enslaver and farmer William Q. Thomson of Happy Valley, Louisa County, Virginia, dated 1845-1854, 1882-1891. The book includes debts to associates, purchases, and bills paid, including for family members. Some of the early entries are for hiring the labor of enslaved people. Thomson (ca. 1825-1891) enslaved at least 22 people, inlcuding Georgeanna and her baby Peter Dudley.

This collection contains a diary maintained by Union officer William T. Morgans in 1865 during the American Civil War. The diary has daily accounts of the weather and Morgans' life, as well as detailed military happenings as his regiment moved from Goldsboro, North Carolina, to Richmond, Virginia, to Washington, D.C. He mentions the surrender of General Robert E. Lee, the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, and his promotion from Sergeant Major to Lieutenant, all in April 1865. After the war, Morgans (1844-1882) of New York was a newspaper publisher and inventor.
