Special Collections and Archives collects primary source materials documenting the health sciences and the health care professions in Virginia. Manuscript collections include the personal papers of Virginia nurses, physicians, dentists, and other health care practitioners as well as the records of various professional organizations. Nursing is particularly well represented. The department also holds the historical records for the Medical Department of Hampden-Sydney College, Medical College of Virginia, and the University College of Medicine as well as the archives for the MCV Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University.

The records of the Virginia Dental Association (VDA) 1870-2011, provide insight into the changes in the dental profession and also the evolution of professional organizations in general.The materials include the official minutes and proceedings of the organization as well as committee records, component society materials, correspondence, financial records, annual meeting records and programs, membership records, subject files, materials relating to the American Dental Association and other national, state, and local dental organizations, and research files used to write One Hundred Years of Dentistry in Virginia.

James B. Kenley Collection 1981-1986

Abstract Or Scope

This collection spans the length of Kenley's tenure with the Virginia Department of Health as well as some of his work with Virginia Commonwealth University. The bulk of the collection is speeches made from 1981-1986 while he was the Virginia Commissioner of Health.

Papers of James L and Dorothy Knowles Thomson 1943 - 1987

Abstract Or Scope

This collection contains the personal papers, war memorabilia, photographs, and general information concerning the 45th General Hospital Group dating from 1936-1985, the bulk of the collection dating from 1939- 1963. The collection is divided with one half being Dr. Thomson's World War II memorabilia and photographs along with paperwork with the Excelsior Club, as group of surgeons brought together by the war. The other half of the collection is papers of his wife, Dorothy Knowles Thomson, who was an instructor of operating room nursing at the Medical College of Virginia, and includes notebooks, course manuals, certifications as well as personal effects.

The papers of Edgar J. Fisher, Jr. contain materials related to Fisher's work as director of the Virginia Council on Health and Medical Care (VCHMC) from 1948-1984. The majority of the papers are articles and editorials about or by the VCHMC that appeared in newspapers, medical publications, and other magazines. Additional items in the collection include VCHMC annual reports, awards and honors, pamphlets, periodicals, Fisher's presentations, and other related materials.

The George F. Keesee Collection 1869-1924

Abstract Or Scope

The core of this collection is Keesee's dental office ledgers which are complete for the years of his practice. (1869-1924). There is also a collection of speeches written by Keesee, as well as some memorabilia. The collection does not include any materials documenting Keesee's work with the Masons, or the dental associations in which he belonged.

Abstract Or Scope

The Alton D. Brashear Collection is primarily the information, documents and materials gathered together to write the history of the 45th General Hospital. This Army medical unit was staffed by faculty from the Medical College of Virginia during World War II. Brashear served as the Chief of Dental Services.

Abstract Or Scope

This is a small, but notable collection as it contains items from the last class to matriculate at the University College of Medicine and it bridges the gap of the two medical schools. This collection includes documents and photographs from 1912-1938. Materials include an illustrated note from a colleague, Johnston's UCM acceptance letter, matriculation card for the 1912-1913 session, first year report card, certificates of completion for his sophmore and junior years, 1916 graduation program embossed with both the MCV and UCM seals, photograph of the 1928 MCV New York alumni, a copy of the Centennial, Medical College of Virginia, 1838-1938 for the New York alumni featuring a biography of Simon Baruch, and the 1938 centennial issue of The Bulletin of the Medical College of Virginia.
