The letter from James Tenney, Jr. to his uncle, John Tenney of Luzerne, NY describes James' journey from upstate New York to Nicholas County, Virginia via Richmond and comments on the attributes of western Virginia. It mentions Kanawha Valley salt production and the lumber industry on the Elk River which supplied materials for boats and barrels used in the salt industry. There are also records of the Irwin family including a genealogy, and the Civil War letters of private George Irwin, a soldier in Company F, 95th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Other families documented include the Redman and Summers families. The collection includes letters, autograph books, family business records, genealogies, photographs, and other material.

Correspondence between members of the Lorentz family of Buckhannon, Upshur County, (West) Virginia. Includes eight letters from scattered dates between 1848 and 1857. Most of the letters were written by Mifflin Lorentz to his wife Fannie (Whitey) Lorentz; these letters include two love letters written before their marriage (1848) and four letters written while Mifflin was travelling on business (1848-1857). These four letters remark upon business, difficulties he had traveling, and homesickness, among other topics. There is also a copy of a letter written by Jacob Lorentz, who was Mifflin's father, to his son Jasper Lorentz (1856) regarding religion and family matters; and a letter to Mifflin from his friend H.W. Williams (1857) regarding religion and mutual acquaintances.

One "Physician's Record", a small pamphlet used by doctors or other medical professionals to document births. This record was used from 1936-1944, mainly for births in Upshur County. These books were issued by the West Virginia State Department of Health to physicians for purposes of statistics and record-keeping. Each page of the book contains a form that can be filled in with the relevant information, including the infant's name, date of birth, birthplace, race, and legitimacy, as well as the parents' names, ages, races, occupations, addresses, and previous children. At the bottom of the form is a space for the physician to date when the birth certificate had been delivered to the registrar.
