Description:
The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) houses one of the largest and most significant collections of rare and unique materials of any educational institution of comparable size in the United States. Focused on Virginia history but with nationally and internationally important collections, the Manuscripts Collection includes letters, diaries, journals, scrapbooks, business records, organizational minutes, and other items that provide evidence of events great and small and the daily lives of Americans of all backgrounds. The Rare Books Collection, with volumes dating from the 15th century to the present, is strong in dogs, Virginia-related items, early Virginia family libraries, gardening and natural history, religion, book arts, printing history, travel, science, and medicine. The University Archives documents the history of William & Mary from 1693 to the present, including a wide range of materials from administrative records, student organization records, and alumni papers to photographs, audio-visual materials, and artifacts.

Abstract Or Scope

Four page letter describing the events of the conflict between Richmond, Virginia Mayor-Elect, Henry K. Ellyson and departing Mayor, George Chahoon in April of 1870. Hall wrote that they have "two Mayors, two Chief's of Police, and two Councils." In an effort to oust the outgoing Mayor, Hall, in support of Ellyson reported that they kept Chahoon and his followers blocked in the market building without food or water for a straight 36 hours before aid arrived in Chahoon's defense. Violence ensued and Hall reported in his letter names of who was wounded, killed, and expressed his hope that the conflict would be settled in short time by Chief Justice Chase.

Abstract Or Scope

Copy of a memo from the Assistant Secretary of Defense to Harry Rowen "regarding the distribution and use of the Vietnam Papers." It was Exhibit B-1 in the trial of U.S. v. Ellsberg-Russo, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, No. 9373-WMB-CD. The memo outlines who has full access to the Vietnam Papers, composed of the Warnke Private Papers, the McNaughton Private Papers, and the OSD Task Force Papers. It is signed by Paul C. Warnke, Horton H. Halperin, and Leslie H. Gelb. Anthony J. Russo, Jr. and Daniel Ellsberg were charged with espionage, theft and conspiracy for allegedly photocopying and publishing the Pentagon Papers (also known as the Report of the Office of the Secretary of Defense Vietnam Task Force) while they were both working with the RAND Corporation. The Pentagon Papers revealed the U.S.'s military and political involvement in Vietnam. The charges were dismissed in 1973.
