George W. Smith, Papers of a Jackson County Resident, 1818/1908, bulk 1818/1885

The papers of George W. Smith (1814-1860), a merchant, justice of the peace, land agent, and presidential elector in the town of Ripley, Jackson County, West Virginia. There are also papers regarding other family members. The collection serves as a narrative and record of business, local politics, and social conditions in West Virginia before and after statehood. It includes business and personal correspondence, financial and legal papers, business and political ledgers, and ephemera. The majority of the business and personal correspondence in this collection consists of incoming letters to George W. Smith from his family and business associates. There are a few letters from Nehemiah Smith, a delegate in the Virginia Assembly, some of which discuss efforts to route a proposed turnpike from Staunton to Ripley (ca. 1833-1842); and letters from Confederate prisoners of war, six from Point Lookout prison in Maryland (1864-1865), and one from Elmira, New York (1864). Cranmer (1826-1903) of Wheeling, West Virginia, who served as secretary of the Wheeling Convention that repudiated Virginia's secession from the United States in 1861. Series 1 includes manuscript narratives and correspondence describing events of the West Virginia statehood movement, written by eyewitnesses at the request of Gibson L. Cranmer. Manuscript authors include John S. Burdett, John S. Carlile, Daniel Frost, Lewis Ruffner, and Benjamin Wilson. Series 2 includes Cranmer's handwritten notes, drafts of articles, copies of documents, and letters solicited by him regarding the history of Wheeling and Ohio County, West Virginia. His early business activity was in wholesale groceries and the lumber industry. He later engaged in newspaper publishing and owned an estimated eighteen weekly papers. Woodyard's sons continued in their father's business after his death. The correspondence consists of letters received by Woodyard during his later terms as congressman (1920s), as well as personal letters from his family and friends.

Company N was organized at Camp White, in 1861 for a three-year tour of duty guarding the B.&O. and North Western railroads. The company was stationed at various times at Burton, Littleton, Barrackville, Fairmont, Clarksburg, Bridgeport, Grafton, and Webster. Squads of this company were detailed for special duty and scouting detail in Cornwallis, Ritchie County; Camp Burne; Camp Wilkinson; and in Monongalia, Marion, and Roane counties; and Fayette and Greene counties, Pennsylvania. Company N was on duty in Fairmont during the Jones Raid in 1863.

On one side is an apparently unsent letter authored by Colonel John Castelli Rathbone, 11th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry, from Spencer (West) Virginia to the commanding officer at Ravenswood, (West) Virginia, dated 2 September 1862. Rathbone urgently requests reinforcements against an expected attack by Confederate cavalry. The verso is a "true copy" of the parole pledge signed by Rathbone and other members of his unit after their surrender to Confederate General Albert G. Jenkins, dated 2 September 1862. Rathbone's unit was captured during Jenkins' Raid on western Virginia. See historical note for further information concerning Colonel Rathbone.
