Miscellaneous items, mainly dealing with the southern counties of West Virginia, particularly the Miller family of Logan County. These include one letter from B.F. Miller of Enterprise, Oregon to his brother, John S. Miller of Logan, two letters from Tollison Shumat of Raleigh County to his daughter, Clara Shumat Miller, and a letter from John L. Miller of Virginia to Mr. and Mrs. John S. Miller of Logan, describing President Harding's funeral. Also includes a letter from West Virginia Governor G.W. Atkinson to Mingo County Prosecutor John L. Stafford (9 August 1899), concerning the extradition and prosecution of the Hatfields, and a sentence of death pronounced on Laban T. Walken in Wayne County (1879).

Mine disaster reports, official hearing reports, and hearing and inquest transcripts (1938-1967). Most of the mine disaster reports were created by inspectors from the West Virginia Department of Mines, and some of them involved federal inspectors. Other reports were created by the United States Bureau of Mines and the West Virginia Department of Mines Coal Mine Safety Board of Review. Also includes volumes 3 through 8 of the Decisions of the Interior Board of Mine Operations Appeals (1974-1977). Photographic postcards documenting the C.H. Mead Coal Company, a mining company located in the Winding Gulf Coalfield in western Raleigh County and eastern Wyoming County, southern West Virginia. Includes 72 postcards issued by the Company in the 1930s in a numbered series to publicize their facilities and activities. Subjects of images include industrial infrastructure, equipment, offices, coal transport, housing, schools, stores, hospital, and portraits of managers. Some facilities are specifically identified for African-Americans. Of the numbered series of 77 postcards in this collection, numbers 1, 5, 13, 29, and 40 are missing. There are also seven photographs of similar subject matter, including one group portrait of an African-American family. These materials were collected by James Laing in connection with his 1933 dissertation "The Negro Miner in West Virginia" (available for check out in West Virginia University's Downtown Library).

Records and photographs documenting the history of southeastern West Virginia compiled by Summers County residents Fred Long and Stephen Trail. Many of the items were collected by a local newspaper, the Hinton Daily News (later the Hinton News). The collection focuses on the history of Summers County and Hinton from the mid-1700s to 2012, as well as the history of other areas in southeastern Virginia and western Virginia. Subjects include the town of Hinton, Hinton High School and Summers County schools, genealogy and family history, the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Railroad, archaeological and geographical features, other Summers County communities, wars, and other topics. Materials include a large quantity of photographs and negatives along with clippings, printed materials, ephemera, oral histories, maps, motion pictures, sound recordings, typescripts, manuscripts, and other types of materials. Many items are facsimiles of photos, documents, and newspapers.

Clippings of 'Bug Dust,' a newspaper column by Michael C. Gallagher of the RALEIGH REGISTER of Beckley, West Virginia. Gallagher wrote about local people and events and offered a local perspective on national events.

Forty-one color photographs documenting the facilities of the National Mine Health and Safety Academy located in Beaver, West Virginia. The photos are 8 inches by 10 inches, and are mounted on cards.

Mercer County subjects include: a Mercer County baseball team in Matoaka, W.Va.
