Description:
The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) houses one of the largest and most significant collections of rare and unique materials of any educational institution of comparable size in the United States. Focused on Virginia history but with nationally and internationally important collections, the Manuscripts Collection includes letters, diaries, journals, scrapbooks, business records, organizational minutes, and other items that provide evidence of events great and small and the daily lives of Americans of all backgrounds. The Rare Books Collection, with volumes dating from the 15th century to the present, is strong in dogs, Virginia-related items, early Virginia family libraries, gardening and natural history, religion, book arts, printing history, travel, science, and medicine. The University Archives documents the history of William & Mary from 1693 to the present, including a wide range of materials from administrative records, student organization records, and alumni papers to photographs, audio-visual materials, and artifacts.

Thomas Scattergood Diaries, 1885/1894

The diaries of Thomas Scattergood (1841-1907). Scattergood was a business man in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area. He was active in the Society of Friends (Quakers), on the Board of the local asylum, treasurer of the Colored Institute, and involved in many civic affairs. He was a teetotaler. He was involved in the incorporation of the Sharpless Dyewood Extracts Company. In the period of these diaries, Scattergood was married to Sarah Garrett Scattergood and had three children, Anna, Alfred and Joseph Henry (known as Henry). The diary contains tintypes of his children, tales of his business ventures, details of illnesses, accounts of Friends Meetings, his day to day business, a record of notable and local deaths, and depictions of family vacations. Scattergood writes every day except for a few times during vacation and sickness. His entries include descriptions of the weather and a thermometer reading. Some notable entries include a vivid dream about heaven, a description of the pain of passing a gall of kidney stone, a private meeting with President Grover Cleveland in January of 1889, and his attendance at the opening of Bryn Mawr College.

Letter, 1865 January 12, from William W. Silvis, Oakland Crossroads, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania to Samuel Steel. In the letter, Silvis talks about the health of Steel's family and the halt of rail roading as a result of the cold weather, wonders if Steel has been in any fights while in the Union Army, and notes that there will be a draft in February if the quota of soldiers is not met. The letter was given by Katrina Garrison in honor of Elizabeth Yeates.
