John R. Hutcheson family
Correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, and other items document the career and family of John R. Hutcheson. After earning his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI), John Redd Hutcheson (1886-1962) began working at the Virginia Agricultural Extension Service in 1914, becoming its director in 1919. Hutcheson was elected as president of VPI in 1945, serving until his nomination as VPI's first chancellor in 1947. The next year he became the first president of the VPI Educational Foundation, Inc. Hutcheson married Eleanor Parrott, with whom he had three children: Eleanor Catlett, John Hutcheson, Jr., and Robert Hutcheson.

A certified copy of an original plat and survey of 1131 acres of land in Montgomery County, Virginia. The copy and the original are dated 1787. The land was surveyed by James Hines for owner Samuel McCraw. The land was later sold to William Whitcroft, who in turn sold the land to Patrick Murray.

This collection contains a typescript entitled Papers Relevant to the Lives of John Taylor Radford (1838-1864) and William Moseley Radford (1840-1862), edited by Rodger Streitmatter, dated April 1981. The document has transcriptions of letters to and from the Radford brothers, which range from topics about their schooling and education, the war front, after their deaths. The typescript also includes a brief family history about the Radfords with marginalia and bibliographic notes related to the names and places mentioned in the letters.

Rudd, R. S.
Diaries, accounts, and statistical records of a schoolteacher from Montgomery and Campbell counties, Virginia, and Monroe County, West Virginia. These records list the schools in which Rudd taught, the homes where he boarded, and his friends and acquaintances. The records also cover his employment with the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad at Central Depot, Virginia, and with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad at Allegheny Station. The third volume is a guest register of the White Sulphur Springs Hotel (The Greenbrier), 1860-1861, 1867-1868, and contains entries for James Buchanan, Winfield Scott, Robert E. Lee, and other nineteenth century notables.
