Sommerville, William.

Correspondence and genealogical materials related to the William B. Edwards family of King George County, Virginia, and the Capt. William Sommerville family of Martinsburg, Virginia (now West Virginia) from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These families were joined when Elizabeth Sommerville (1812-1886), daughter of the Revolutionary War veteran, married William B. Edwards (1810-1888), a Methodist clergyman from a planter family, in 1833.

Letters written by Francis M. Skillin of the Maine 15th Volunteers, Company H to friends and family in Garland, Maine. Topics include Union General Neale Dow and Maine draft evaders fleeing to Canada. Four letters were written from Martinsburg during the winter of 1864-65. Other letters were written from Augusta, Maine; Cambridge, Massachusetts; Pensacola, Florida; and Baltimore, Maryland.

Private journal of George K. Campbell of Athens County, Ohio, who served as an officer in Company B of the 116th. Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Gettysburg campaign and the summer, fall, and winter of 1863, when he saw service in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Campbell served detached duty as an escort officer for recruits and prisoners during the spring and summer of 1864 and visited New York, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. He joined Company B of the 187th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in September 1864. That unit was soon consolidated and became Company E of the 174th. Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

Personal and business papers of the Martinsburg agriculturalist and banker who was a representative of the American Farm Bureau Federation in Washington and a member of the West Virginia Senate, 1907-1913. Much of the material relates to fruit growing and marketing and other business activities of Silver, as well as Democrat politics. Subjects covered include: requests and discussions of the merits of political appointments; lobbying within and through the Democrat Party for agricultural interests; and discussion of campaign efforts and the prospects of electing Democrats to national and state offices.

Hart and Woolworth Lumber Mill
Journal of accounts, 1810-1820, for the Hart and Woolworth Lumber Mill, located in Martinsburg, West Virginia. The mill was originally owned by Stephen Hart and Reuben Woolworth, but Walter Martin bought Woolworth's share in March 1811. Pages of the account book are organized according to account owner. Entries list all work, amount charged, and account balance. Work typically include the sawing of boards, planks, lath boards, and clapboards (ash, oak, hemlock, birch, butternut), related items (joists, nails, logs, pickets), and the amount of labor. The last page consists of a list of repairs made to the saw mill.

Military orders, telegrams, military correspondence concerning Campbell's command, lists of Confederate deserters, ordnance and quartermaster returns, additional military records, and a personal diary of Colonel Campbell, commander of the Fifty-fourth Pennsylvania Volunteers which operated along the line of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad between Cumberland, Maryland, and Martinsburg, West Virginia. Subjects include civilian-military relations; guerrilla activities of John D. Imboden, the Ringgold Raiders, and the McNeill's Rangers; treatment of Confederate sympathizers; fighting in the Shenandoah Valley in the spring of 1864; and military operations in the Eastern panhandle of West Virginia.
