This autograph and miscellany collection created by Christian Sixtus Hutter consists of miscellaneous material ranging from circa 1602 to 1945 and includes autographs, correspondence, government documents, financial and legal documents, military documents, and telegrams, chiefly from the United States and Great Britain, but also including some material from continental Europe. While most of the collection is in the English language, there are a number of documents in French, German, Spanish, and Dutch. This material was formerly stored in the Hutter cabinets when Special Collections was located in Alderman Library, and consists of material which could not be matched with known Hutter accession numbers. Autographs include those of royalty, such as George I, George III, and George IV; theologians, ministers, and religious leaders; nobility, chiefly English; jurists, lawyers, and judges; family correspondence; and public officials.

This collection contains three photographs with captions on the verso, "Black children and men taken in or near New Orleans." These images were taken "en route" to New Orleans, possibly from a train, in the 1930s. One photograph shows a group of young boys on a street with an inscription on the reverse that says "New Orleans." Another depicts three boys and one older man singing on train tracks with an inscription that reads "En Route to New Orleans/ Kids singing." The last is a photograph of three boys tumbling on train tracks, with the inscription "En route to New Orleans/ scrambling for money." The photographs are black and white gelatin silver measuring 3 x 5.5 inches

The John Jay Stevens Diaries consist of two diaries written by Stevens between September 4, 1863 and October 31, 1863 while commissary officer of the 110th New York Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. Diary one entries commence as the 110th embarked on its cruise from New Orleans, La. to what would be known as the Battle of Sabine Pass, Texas at the mouth of the Sabine River. Stevens details eight days aboard the troop transport steamer 'Thomas Winthrop' in the Gulf of Mexico covering the battle of and the Federal retreat from Sabine Pass and the return trip to New Orleans. From September 12, 1863 through the end of the second diary he covers the 110th N.Y.'s overland campaign in Louisiana. Diary Two begins on September 26, 1863. The body of the entries after the cruise include troop movements, day to day camp life, and the Battle of Carrion Crow Bayou. Stevens documents experiences in and scenery of the Louisiana bayou country with vivid description. Entries are penned from New Orleans, Algiers, Brashear City, Berwick, Camp Bisland, Franklin, New Iberia, camp on the Teche, and Opelousas. He touches on foraging expeditions to abandoned plantations, the reaction of the local populace to the presence of the Federal troops, race relations and slavery, the landscape and weather, the character of the army and his commanding officers, death and disease, and his relations within the ranks. Stevens writes with a range of tones, but mantains a sense of humor throughout. This collection also includes a fascinating letter written by Stevens in 1875 while he was living in Greeley, Colorado. The letter, written to his sister Kate Forbes and her family in Oswego, New York, reports on the town and his life there. From the letter we learn that Stevens had ventured west for, among other reasons, his health. The collection also includes a letter fragment of an unknown child relative of Stevens in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

This collection of materials relates to the February 2007 trip organized by Marguerite McClinton, Director of Elrod Commons and Campus Activities, in conjunction with the Office of Disaster Response for the Episcopal Diocese of Louisana, in which W&L students travelled to New Orleans to help with disaster relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina. It contains information about New Orleans, original volunteer agreements and releases, a letter from the Diocese to McClinton thanking her for organizing the trip, New Orleans visitors informational brochures, four cd-roms containing digital photographs, and a cd-rom containing a video created by the Diocese of Louisana about the disaster response efforts.
