Carroll, Kingwood attorney and editor of the PRESTON COUNTY HERALD.? Subjects include the presidential elections of 1856 and 1884 in West Virginia.? Other papers relate to Kingwood and area mercantile firms, and the operation of the PRESTON COUNTY JOURNAL, 1891-1894; and a circulation record of Preston County newspapers, 1889-1897. Papers of the Fairfax and Warman families of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, Morgantown, and Kingwood. There are letters (1811-1874) to Elizabeth Fairfax from family members and friends; papers (1840-1851) of William Warman; papers on the settlement of the John Fairfax estate; a manuscript census book of Preston County for 1830; and an account book (1857-1872) of F.B.F. Fairfax. A few advertising circulars, 1866-1931, are included, as well as clippings on Morgantown and Monongalia County, 1868-1933.

Correspondence, sermons, religious writings, and accounts of a graduate of Wesleyan University and Harvard Law School, Methodist missionary to India (ca.1876-1885), and son of Representative James Clark McGrew of Kingwood. Subjects include West Virginia politics; social activities in Kingwood; conditions in the Indian mission field; nautical improvements tested at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, 1879; Northwestern University; and the Republican National Convention of 1880.

Papers of the Hagans family of Preston County, West Virginia, including Harrison, Elisha, George M., Henry C., John Marshall, Zer Hagans, and others. There are letters, invoices, account books, advertisements, and other business records pertaining to family business enterprises including several general merchandise stores and outlets in western Pennsylvania and Maryland, and at Brandonville, Kingwood, Greenville, and Palatine, West Virginia. There are several postal records from Harrison Hagans' twenty years as postmaster, 1822-1841, at Brandonville, and magistrate papers and deeds, most regarding the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. There are also financial records documenting Hagans' tenure as president of the Greenville Mining and Manufacturing Company which produced iron in Preston County in the 1830s. Other information records Hagans' interests in: county roads, schools, churches, government and politics; the Preston Telegraph Company; a fulling mill, 1827; and a linseed oil mill, 1842. There are Hagan patents for a washing and wringing machine (1845), and working models of mowing and threshing machines. There is a volume of minutes of the quarterly conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, 1834-1859, and 1861 Wheeling Convention papers regarding a new state government, and Civil War letters from family and friends.

Originals and copies of clippings and photographs concerning the life and career of Izetta Jewel Kenny Brown Miller. Her career included work in the theater, Women's Suffrage Movement, radio, agriculture, television, and politics. Her first husband was William Gay Brown, Sr., West Virginia Congressman from Kingwood, and her second marriage was to Dr. Hugh Miller of the faculties of George Washington University and Union College. In 1922 and 1924, Mrs. Brown ran for the nomination as the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate from West Virginia. She twice seconded the nomination of John W. Davis at the Democratic National Convention.

Books, periodicals, films, photos, and other papers relating to World War II, United States Army Intelligence, Nazi propaganda, and the post-war denazification program in Germany. Some of the material is in German. Lawrence Nuce, a Kingwood, West Virginia, native was a combat sergeant during the war. During the occupation, he was a commissioned officer in charge of supervising schools in Bavaria. Includes war newspapers, army manuals, occupation and education reports, and other material.
