Thompson, John and Robert
Diary and account book, 1804-1811, of John Thompson containing accounts of items bought and sold, money owed by and to Thompson, two journeys on the Mississippi River between Nashville, Natchez, and New Orleans, 1804-1805, and numerous remedies for diseases and medical complaints. There is a second diary by Robert C. Thompson, a Confederate soldier, from August 1862 to February 1863. Robert Thompson was a member of a Tennessee unit, imprisoned at Camp Morton, exchanged in September 1862, and spent the remainder of the time covered by the diary with his reorganized company in Mississippi near Vicksburg. Places mentioned include Camp Morton near Indianapolis, Indiana; Richmond, Virginia; Gallatin and Memphis, Tennessee; Cairo, Illinois; Columbus and Hickman, Kentucky; Vicksburg, Clinton, Jackson, Corinth, Holly Spring, Tippa Ford, and Oxford, Mississippi.

McCalla, John Moore, 1793-1873

Papers of a Lexington, Kentucky, attorney and editor of the Lexington KENTUCKY GAZETTE, include payrolls of jurors and witnesses, Circuit Court, District of Kentucky, Frankfort, 1830-1838; correspondence, briefs, and other papers in the case of WILLIAM CLARK v. U.S., 1852-1870; newspaper clippings from Lexington and other newspapers pertaining to national and Kentucky politics in the Jacksonian era; and a few pamphlets. Also includes extensive collection of broadsides published in Kentucky in the period 1790-1846 regarding political, cultural, and social issues; an inventory of these broadsides was published in the Kentucky Historical Society Register, vol. 58, no. 4 (October 1960) and vol. 59, no. 1 (January 1961). A card catalog with descriptions of each broadside is available in the Center.

Lewis family
Personal and business papers of the Lewis family, mainly of John D. (1800-1882), Charles C., Sr. (b.1839), and Charles C., Jr. (b.1865), of Kanawha County. For the period 1825-1875 there are papers of various members of the Ruffner, Dickinson, and Wilson families of West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, Kansas, Missouri, and other states. The business papers relate to farming operations, the purchase and sale of slaves, salt manufacturing and trade, the Old Sweet Springs Company, coal, iron, oil, lumbering, railroads, and real estate in Kanawha, Clay, Boone, Fayette, and Nicholas counties. There are newspaper clippings, speeches, and other papers reflecting the Lewis' interests in the Democratic Party in the period 1914-1920. Settlement papers and correspondence regarding the estates of John D. Lewis, and Joel, Daniel, and Andrew Ruffner are in the collection. The personal papers include diaries, scrapbooks, photographs, and letters. Travel accounts in the United States, South America, and Europe are given in the correspondence, as well as comments on schools in West Virginia and Virginia; the building of a church in Kanawha County in 1834; missionary work in Colombia, South America, 1874-1875; Civil War and postwar conditions in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, and Missouri; conditions at Camp Chase, in the Civil War; and material relating to World War I.

The interviews, correspondence, notes and reports of a Wisconsin based, New York born antiquarian and early researcher of frontier history. Lyman C. Draper's manuscripts were willed to the Wisconsin State Historical Society where he had been its corresponding secretary and instrumental in its development. Microfilm was produced by the society of his papers and made available for purchase to libraries because of their significance for studying the Eastern frontier and its pioneers. Draper had originally planned to publish on the basis of these manuscripts a series of books on frontier history and biographies of famous pioneers. Only one was published, King's Mountain and Its Heroes. Draper, in his writings, generally reflected biases common to white male Americans of the nineteenth century but he collected many documents and interviewed women, Native Americans, and African Americans connected with the frontier and their descendents. Indeed he had collected enough material that he had decided to write biographies of chiefs: Tecumseh and Joseph Brant. Other materials for biographies are of white frontier notables such as Daniel Boone, George Rogers Clark, Lewis Wetzel, Simon Kenton, and Samuel Brady. His papers are also organized regionally with holdings encompassing an area bordered by the western parts of Virginia and the Carolinas and portions of Georgia and Alabama, encompassing the entire Ohio River Valley, and part of the upper Mississippi Valley from the era of frontier conflicts in the 1740's and 1750's to the American Revolution and the War of 1812.

McClure Family Box 6, Folder 13

This folder contains an account of a 1785 Native American attack and the scalping of McClure children in Lincoln County, Kentucky. There is also the last will and testament of John McClure which includes the sale of a slave named Anthony conditional upon the remarriage of McClure's wife or the coming of age of his youngest child.

The information had been collected by Meadows Heritage, a family organization, since 1975.

Ochs family
Papers of the Nathan Ochs family of Shelby and Jefferson County, Kentucky, document the family history from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century and chiefly concern his children. Letters from siblings Simon, Nathan Jr., and Sallie Ochs are written from Kentucky to their brother, Charles, in California between 1884 and the early 1900s. Topics chiefly include the weather, their farms (crops, animals, and farm workers), family news, and their mother's illness and death. Genealogical records document the history of the family beginning with Nathan Ochs, who was born in Germany in the 1820s. These materials include naturalization papers for Nathan Ochs, genealogical charts for his descendants, and a narrative history of the family written by Shirley A. Ochs Cocke in 1970.

Okey Meadows, Coal History Manuscript 0.1 Linear Feet Summary: 1 in. (1 folder)

Licking River Commerce Company
Okey Meadows wrote this history, entitled "Black Diamonds", which covers coal mining from ancient times to the present, describes cannel coal and its uses, and includes a prospectus for the Licking River Commerce Company of Kentucky. Other subjects dealt with are economic conditions of the early 1930s and the geology of oil shales.

(1) Tom Myerscough, Bloody Hell in Kentucky, circa 1932, a fictionalized account of the National Miners Union strike in Harlan County, Kentucky, in 1931. Myerscough became an organizer and then president of the National Miners Union.
(2) Adam Getto, Autobiography, 1975, an autobiography of his experiences as a union section leader at Bethlehem Steel's Ellsworth Mine in Bentleyville, Pennsylvania.
(3) Miriam Schultz, Bread Upon the Waters, circa 1970, a novel about coal miners in western Pennsylvania.
(4) Miriam Schultz, "Larry Corcoran," circa 1970, a short story about a coal miner in western Pennsylvania.
(5) Tony Sabo, Stripped Naked in Public, circa 1971, an autobiographical account about his life in coal towns in northern West Virginia and his work in the Welfare Rights Organization.
Microfilm contains copies of Autobiography, Stripped Naked in Public, and "Larry Corcoran."
