Includes 88 glass plate negatives documenting subjects from Grafton and Taylor County, West Virginia from circa 1890-1925. Subjects include farming scenes, classrooms and schools, stores, bridges, tunnels, railroads, bands, rivers, home and town scenes, saw mills, industry, and churches and cemeteries. Four boxes contain the original glass plate negatives while one box contains the original sleeves for the negatives, including identifying information where present. Digitized copies of the glass plate negatives are available.

Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company

Records of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, consisting of five telegrams (1864), one letter with envelope (1863), one freight conductor's report (May 17, 1862, between Piedmont and Grafton), and small map of the Railroad (ca. 1853 - 1863). There is also a letterpress copybook for correspondence of B.L. Jacobs, an employee of the Railroad writing from the Grafton station (43 pages for April to August, 1858). A telegram to Colonel George R. Latham regards an arrest (ca. 1864), and a telgram to Colonel John Ely (August 17, 1864) asks the question of whether a slave of a loyal man in West Virginia can act as a substitute for another "without the master's consent." The copybook includes a letter regarding the wreck of engine 125 (page 61, April 20, 1858).

Assorted bills and receipts of Clarence West, who operated a grocery store on Yates Street in Grafton, West Virginia, in the early twentieth century. Bills and receipts from various wholesalers chiefly date from 1914, 1915, and 1918, and list dry goods items such as salt strips, lard, whole nutmegs, biscuits, tobacco, bacon, cheese, rice, sugar, coffee, milk, pins, and sewing machine oil.

Some 270 letters, telegrams, and notes written to Robinson; the great majority of the items are by Stephen B. Elkins regarding the purchase of coal lands and the development of coal mining in the Cheat River Valley, Preston County, Masontown, Muddy Creek, Green Run, and Sandy Creek; political affairs in Taylor County are mentioned; also included are five letter books with some 2367 copies of letters sent by Ira E. Robinson and his nephew, Jed W. Robinson, relating to their law practice in Grafton in the Years 1898-1908.

Papers of a livestock broker, farmer, and merchant of Mingo Flats, Randolph County, who was associated with John T. McGraw in the development of Marlinton and the purchase and sale of land, coal, and timber in neighboring Pocahontas County. There are some items of Civil War interest, while the bulk of the correspondence relates to the marketing of ginseng, beeswax, wool, venison, animal pelts, and farm machinery. There is significant correspondence relating to state politics and railroads. Correspondents include J.M. Bennett, J.N. Camden, David Goff, John J. Jackson, McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, John T. McGraw, and The Pocahontas Development Company. Also includes some material of G.E. Jarvis, father of Anna Jarvis, the founder of Mother's Day.

Also contains receipt for purchase of slave (1864); genealogy regarding the Forrest family and other families (undated); and a deed for a cemetery plot (1884). West Virginia related publications of the Work Progress Administration, mainly consisting of Inventories of the County Archives of West Virginia prepared by The Historical Records Survey Division of Women's and Professional Projects, as well as inventories of federal archives in West Virginia, church archives, public vital statistics, and calendars of letters and papers. Also includes two folk studies of counties by the West Virginia Writers' Program. The Historical Records Survey was a project of the Works Progress Administration New Deal program in the United States. Originally part of the Federal Writers' Project, it was devoted to surveying and indexing historically significant records in state, county and local archives.
