Abstract Or Scope
Folklore of West Virginia collected by Woofter, who was a student of John Harrington Cox and Louis Watson Chappell. The collection consists of a card file of approximately 10,000 folklore items, including superstitions, sayings, riddles, remedies and tales, as well as a pair of unpublished bound volumes entitled FOLKLORE OF WEST VIRGINIA containing folklore and folksongs with musical notation by Woofter's protege Patrick Gainer. While Woofter never published his discoveries, he did supply materials to important publications by John Harrington Cox and Josiah Combs.

Features indicated on the maps include: roads (US, primary state roads, secondary state roads); state, county, district, and corporate lines; railroads; streams; parks and forests; highway bridges; county seats; cities and villages; lodges; farms; houses; businesses; oil and gas wells; commercial airfields; schools; churches; mines; power plants; factories; hotels; and other information.

Also includes a petition of Harrison County, (West) Virginia citizens to Brigadier General Kelly protesting the return and admittance to the county of former members of the Confederate Army (undated); a petition of Gilmer County, (West) Virginia citizens denouncing secession and pledging action to suppress rebellion (1861); and the act by which the Restored Government of Virginia gave permission for the new state of West Virginia to be formed from Virginia (May 12, 1863). Also includes a photostat negative of a typescript checklist of Pierpont manuscript material held at the Virginia State Library (now Library of Virginia) (1916). Correspondents include: Arthur I. Correspondence and financial records of a Gilmer County businessman, gas drilling contractor, schoolteacher, and elementary school principal who was involved also with coal, timber, real estate, and water well businesses. The correspondence concerns Miller's business affairs; dealings with government agencies, such as the Federal Power Commission and the Small Business Administration; applications for teaching positions and graduate schools; tax problems; campaign for a seat on the school board; and dealings with West Virginia politicians. The financial material includes an account of the profits from gas wells. Other subjects include drilling costs and contracts; coal sales; Gilmer County schools and politics; business problems; land sales; road maintenance and construction; and the Consolidated Gas Company. Correspondents include Chauncey Browning, Jr., James Kee, Robert H. Mollohan, Arch Moore, and Hulett Smith.

The collection includes Civil War related material; correspondence; financial, business, and legal records; and other material. The Civil War material includes a receipt for the sale of enslaved Africans, military orders, and records of financial transactions made in Confederate currency. The correspondence within the collection includes personal letters between members of the Hays family as well as correspondence with friends and acquaintances. Genealogical records, compiled by Professor Joseph M. Kellogg, Lawrence, Kansas, of the Henkel, McCann, Johnson, Mitchell, and Teter families. The records include copies of many nineteenth century documents. Allied families mentioned are Apple, Eschmann, Grisemer, Hammer, Harper, Hite, Pearies, Peterson, Ruleman, Scholl, See (Zeh), Simmons, Skidmore, and Westfall-Kortrecht. Most of these families settled in the South Branch Valley and the counties of Harrison, Lewis, Randolph, Barbour, Braxton, and Gilmer. One volume contains the history and various records of the German settlers of the Tulpechocken District of Berks County, Pennsylvania, and miscellaneous records of several Shenandoah Valley and western Virginia counties.
