Carte du Canada et des Etats-Unis de l'Amèrique Septentrionale 1 Sheets Closed Stacks, Drawer 33

Displayed here is the third state of the "Carte des Pays...de Canada," published by Jean Baptiste Fortin who had acquired the stock of the Vaugondy firm. This map is one of the first to recognize the name of the newly formed United States, "Etats Unis," as seen by the inclusion of the phrase in the title cartouche. The map is closely related to J.B. Eliot's "Carte du Theatre de la Guerre Actuel Entre les Anglais et les Treize Colonies Unies de l'Amerique Septentrionale ..." Eliot also uses the phrase "Etats Unis" in his map, referring to his title of U.S. Engineer under his name. Both Fortin and Eliot published their maps in 1778.

This a a collection of diaries of William Couch Davis, Jr., and his wife, Mary Anderson Davis, including accounts of William's jobs in France (1917-19), Cuba, Savannah, and Norfolk. They include many details about the Davis family of West Point, Virginia. One of Mary's diaries covers their first married year (1924-25) in Cuba and others cover their trips (1935-1959) out west in Canada and to Central America and Europe.

Papers regarding West Virginia statehood and the history of Wheeling and Ohio County compiled by Judge Gibson L. Cranmer (1826-1903) of Wheeling, West Virginia, who served as secretary of the Wheeling Convention that repudiated Virginia's secession from the United States in 1861. Series 1 includes manuscript narratives and correspondence describing events of the West Virginia statehood movement, written by eyewitnesses at the request of Gibson L. Cranmer. Manuscript authors include John S. Burdett, John S. Carlile, Daniel Frost, Lewis Ruffner, and Benjamin Wilson. Series 2 includes Cranmer's handwritten notes, drafts of articles, copies of documents, and letters solicited by him regarding the history of Wheeling and Ohio County, West Virginia. Diaries of Thomas M. Leeper, 1886-1950 (Box 1). Samuel Leeper wrote a few of the first entries, and some family members wrote some of the last entries documenting Thomas Leeper's last days. Subjects in the diaries include family life; work life; weather; encounters with visitors, friends, and neighbors; and travels. Counties traveled include Calhoun, Clay, Lewis, Harrison, Marion, Wirt and more. Inserts in the diaries include receipts, penciled sketches, and other paraphernalia. Added entry at the end of the 1950 diary: "Thomas M. Leeper died 3:30 the morning of July 31-1950, funeral August 2 in Methodist Church, preacher-Rev. McKinney."
