Grant and Florence Carter Mayfield, she was a noted West Virginia writer of the inter-war era who also published under the surname of her first husband as Lillian Mayfield Roberts. She studied at New York University under the famous poet, Joyce Kilmer who later died as an American soldier in World War I.
