Louise Herreshoff Papers, 1867/1977

This collection includes an important archive of letters, personal files, photos, and biographical information of esteemed painter Louise Herreshoff, her second husband Euchlin Reeves and their families. Euchlin Reeves was a graduate of Washington and Lee University (WLU) School of Law and is the namesake of WLU's Reeves Center, home of the Reeves Collection – a large and internationally important ceramics collection (1500 – present) and Louise Herreshoff's paintings, given by the couple to the university beginning in 1967.

This biography of Louise Herreshoff by James Whitehead was created using personal correspondence, and regularly cites her letters. It depicts her life, familial ties, influences, time in Paris, period of art creation, china collecting, her two marriages, and her relationship with Washington and Lee University.

This box consists of personal correspondence from 1948-1956, miscellaneous correspondence, publications, a brochure for the Herreshoff exhibit from 1972. Correspondence following the dated range and sorted into categories by creator are preserved in original order and often relate to James W. Whithead's attempts to gather materials related to Herreshoff and Reeves' lives and history of art collection and creation.

This box contains an Herreshoff journal and sketchbook, postcards from her trip to Shanghai, and the "sick bag outline" that James W. Whitehead wrote the draft of "A Fragile Union: The Story of Louise Herreshoff" on.

Mame Warren collection, 1997/1999

The Mame Warren Collection consists of 90 oral history interviews and historic photographs collected for her 1998 book project, 'Come cheer for Washington and Lee University: the University at 250 years!'. Warren conducted interviews with 90 individuals associated with Washington and Lee University, including former faculty, staff, coaches, employees, alumni, and friends. Each interview is boxed uniquely and includes audio cassette recordings, both master and user copies, and their respective paper transcriptions. In preparation for the book, Warren collected W and L related historic photographs and negatives campus-wide and beyond. The photographs are diverse in content, size, and format. The body of the photographic collection is sleeved and stored in multiple three-ring binders. Larger formats are boxed and shelved separately. Some images are framed. While many of the images were used in the book, the collection includes many that were not. The master index of the photographs is available in W and L Special Collections.

Letter from John W. Whitehead to Mr. and Mrs. Gottwald, 1983 Box 1, Folder 1

Letter discusses an article Whitehead discovered while in Houston regarding a VMI Cadet Christopher G. Caplice and his commitment to honor. Whitehead found the article uplifting and sent it to General Walber (spelling questionable). Whitehead was in Houston following his son's stroke in August of that year.

Letter to Mr. and Mrs. Gottwald from John D. Wilson, 1991 Box 1, Folder 7

Remarks on the declining financial support of the University's counterparts, yet makes it clear that the University enters the 'new year in a vibrant condition'. Notes the sudden death of Professor Minor Rodgers, a member of the Department of Religion on campus. Includes an update on the landscaping of the Lenfest Center, the new addition to Lewis Hall, the near completion of the Fraternity Renaissance, and the donation, by Elizabeth Watson, of a collection of oriental artifacts to be housed in a new addition to the Reeves Center. Remarks that while the University has been able to avoid the downshift in American applicants, this may catch up to the University soon. Notes the importance of the endowment and ends with a personal note.

Letter to Mr. and Mrs. Gottwald from John D. Wilson, 1992 Box 1, Folder 8

Notes the near beginning of the academic year, and the subsequent rise in energy level and activity in Lexington. Remarks on the strength of the incoming academic profiles, as well as the geographic diversity of both the undergraduate and Law School classes and the expanding football program. Wilson hopes that the University can demonstrate that athletics and academics are not mutually exclusive. Notes Dean Bezanson's speech regarding honor and civility to the incoming law students, and gives an update on the Reeves Center construction. Wilson gives an update on the fraternity renovations, as well as the continued undertakings of the Capital Campaign
