This bound notebook includes notes taken by Wheeling resident Archibald W. Paull during lectures at Washington College, Washington, Pennsylvania. Paull attended the college from 1861 to 1865 after graduating from Wheeling's Linsly Institute. He became president of Nail City Stamping Co. and engaged in the manufacture of glass products. He was the son of Ohio County judge and West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals justice James W. Paull.

The papers of George W. Smith (1814-1860), a merchant, justice of the peace, land agent, and presidential elector in the town of Ripley, Jackson County, West Virginia. There are also papers regarding other family members. The collection serves as a narrative and record of business, local politics, and social conditions in West Virginia before and after statehood. It includes business and personal correspondence, financial and legal papers, business and political ledgers, and ephemera. The majority of the business and personal correspondence in this collection consists of incoming letters to George W. Smith from his family and business associates. There are a few letters from Nehemiah Smith, a delegate in the Virginia Assembly, some of which discuss efforts to route a proposed turnpike from Staunton to Ripley (ca. 1833-1842); and letters from Confederate prisoners of war, six from Point Lookout prison in Maryland (1864-1865), and one from Elmira, New York (1864). Papers of historian and collector Hunter F. Armentrout of Gilmer County, West Virginia, primarily documenting the history of the Gilmer County region in the 19th century. Collection chiefly contains correspondence, writings, financial papers, and photographs, One major component of the collection includes the letters of Amie Evaline Sexton Silcott (1836-1865), a member of the Sexton family from New England who settled in western Virginia. Her letters contain much information regarding life in Upshur, Gilmer, and Calhoun Counties before and during the Civil War (transcriptions are available). There are also letters of her immediate family as well as other members of the Hays, Young, and Sexton families (circa 1840-1890). Other materials include Armentrout's research notes, land speculation papers of Minter Jackson (ca. 1840-1860), a local World War II era newsletter (1942-1945), court documents regarding distribution of abolitionist literature (1857), and photographs regarding Glenville Normal School (ca. 1880-1920).

Correspondence, school themes and programs. The correspondence addressed to Lucy Bayard (later Keys) is from friends and relatives and covers scattered dates from 1871 to 1932. The letters are written primarily from and to Rice's Landing and Beaver (Pennsylvania), and Morgantown (West Virginia), discussing personal and family affairs. The school themes are unsigned, on the subjects "Old Maids," "Decision," "Thought Culture," "Institutes," and "An Aim in Life." The school programs are from Washington and Jefferson College, Waynesburg College, and California State Normal School, all in southwestern Pennsylvania.
