Edward M. Eustler's photographic scrapbook documents his experience while a student at Washington and Lee University from 1910-1911. The scrapbook has approximately 350 photographs. Subjects campus and dorm life, athletics, architecture, local landmarks and historic sights, fraternity and club initiations, the Lexington, Virginia downtown area, the Virginia Military Institute, faculty and staff, local residents such as Jeff Shields and Henry O. Dold, friends, and family. The scrapbook also documents Eustler and others at Camp Ogburn in Summerfield, North Carolina in the summer of 1910 as well as a camping excursion to the summit of North Carolina's Mt. Mitchell in 1911.

Executive letter books of Governor Andrew J. Montague, 1902-1906

The executive letter books contain the outgoing correspondence of Governor Andrew Jackson Montague between January 1902 and February 1906, arranged chronologically. Letters were written by Governor Montague, private secretary D. A. Ritchie, executive clerk J. Bigger, and Lt. Governor Joseph E. Willard during his brief tenure as acting governor. There are also copies of messages to the Senate and House of Delegates, including explanations for bills that the governor returned without approval. Many letters concerned appointments or requests for executive pardons. Governor Montague also issued proclamations designating Arbor Days, Labor Days, and days of Thanksgiving.

Frank Smith Reader diary and transcription, 1863/1964

This collection consists of a diary kept by Frank Smith Reader between March-June 1864. In it, he describes the march up the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, the burning of the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), the pillaging that took plage in Lexington, and the march to Lynchburg. Reader also documented the weather, his daily duties, the conduct of officers, the 9th West Virginia Cavalry, the 5th West Virginia Cavalry, Ringgold Battallion, and Averell's Division. He also compares the appearance of the Shenandoah Valley, its homes and people with conditions existing at the time of his march through the same territory in 1862. Additional topics include the following: capture of Piedmont by McNeill, "Porte Crayon," skirmishes with McNeill and Imboden, enemy engagement, desperate fighting and the retreat from Mt. Jackson, General Hunter replacing General Sigel, the military capabilities of Hunter and Sigel, Crook's victories in the Kanawah Valley, Hunter's campaign, burning houses, subsisting off the country, engagement at Staunton, the death of Confederate General W. E. Jones, Governor Letcher's home, the destruction of the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad, the start to White Sulphur, being taken prisoner and marched under guard to Calihan's Station, being in jail in Covington, and the possibility of being sent south.

Tignal Jones "T.J." Morton letters, 1860/1861 Box 1, Folder 27

Six letters written by Virginia Military Institute (V.M.I.) cadet Tignal Jones "T.J." Morton of Mecklenburg County, Virginia during the year preceeding Virginia's secession from the United States and the American Civil War. Cadet Morton's letters document his academic, military, and social experience as a cadet at the military school in Lexington, Virginia. Of note are letters pertaining to the fervor of local pro and anti-Secessionists and an important incident in which a Secession flag was raised at V.M.I. and challenged by the Lexington residents. Morton was a Secessionist and left V.M.I. to served in the Confederate Army in 1862. He served as an officer in both the 56th Virginia Infantry in the Army of Northern Virginia and the 53rd Tennessee Infantry in the western theater of the war.
