Executive letter book contains the outgoing correspondence of Governor James L. Kemper between 1874 and 1877, arranged chronologically. Letters were written by Governor Kemper, clerk P. F. Howard, Secretary of the Commonwealth James McDonald, and personal secretaries Meade C. Kemper, S. Bassett French, Baker P. Lee, and Charles Rutledge Whipple. Governor Kemper corresponded with a variety of individuals in federal and state government as well as important private indiviudals,on issues including the state war debt, prisoners and the Penitentiary, the volunteer militia, the Petersburg city government bill veto, requests for patronage, the Centennial Exhibition, the Virginia Military Institute, boundary disputes with West Virginia and Maryland, and the Foley statue of Stonewall Jackson. The letter book also includes a number of messages addressed to the Senate and House of Delegates of Virginia.

The Borland, Green, and Godwin families are related in the following manner. George Godwin, son of Jeremiah Godwin, married Fanny Green (whose mother was Mary (Giles) Green) in 1805. Dr. Thomas Wood Borland (d. 1830 or 1831), father of Roscius Cicero Borland, married Harriott Godwin, daughter of Jeremiah Godwin and Sarah (Wilkinson) Godwin.

Letters, 1881-1899, received by Bradley T. Johnson from former and fellow Civil War soldiers concerning the burning of Chambersburg, Pa., conflict between Jubal Early and William Mahone, and the Kilpatrick-Dahlgren Raid. Correspondents are C.B. Dahlgren, John Warwick Daniel, Jubal A. Early, James W. Eldridge, Wade Hampton, Henry Brainerd McClellan, William E. Peters, and John H. Worsham.

The collection includes correspondence primarily between 1890-1908, of Flora (Adams) Darling, concerning the founding of the Daughters of the American Revolution, General Society of Daughters of the Revolution, National Society, and the United States Daughters of 1812. Correspondents include Edward William Bok, Jessie Benton Fremont, William Archer Rutherfoord Goodwin, George Frisbie, John Tyler Morgan, William Mahone, Alexander Hamilton Stephens, and Lyon Gardiner Tyler.

Papers, 1863-1890, relating to Jubal A. Early. Includes typescript of an account of the evening of the first day and the morning of the second day at the Battle of Gettysburg by [?] Turner; typescript of a report of Isaac Ridgeway Trimble regarding the Battle of Second Manassas; letter, 1867, of Mrs. E. C. Wirz [widow of Henry Wirz] thanking Early for a copy of his A Memoir of the Last Year of the War for Independence; and letter, 31 March 1884, from Early concerning Second Manassas and Antietam.

The bulk of this collection consists of documents relating to commissary stores, provisions, and supplies handled by Major P. M. Slaughter, Brigade Commissary, Mahone's Brigade. Other documents include correspondence that relates to the enlistment of Shelton Watts of Amherst County, Virginia in Thomas Kirkpatrick's Battery, and two legal broadsides from the District Court of Confederate States concerning sequestration of property of "alien enemies."
