This collection contains chiefly correspondence with Washington and Lee University and United Daughters of the Confederacy officials, resolutions, and reports relating to her participation in the controversy over W&L President Henry Louis Smith's proposed renovation and expansion of the Lee Chapel. Also includes correspondence and clippings relating to fund-raising for the Stratford Hall restoration. Correspondents include members of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Washington and Lee officials, and Lee family members. It also includes a copy of Mary Randolph Custis Lee's will dated 1918.

The collection includes materials acquired from the Lee family and items donated to and purchased and compiled by W&L University since Lee's tenure as president of Washington College from 1865 - 1870. Adminstrative papers, such as President's Reports, etc..., from Robert E. Lee's presidency of the school may be found within the W&L University Archives. This collection is comprised of an eight page typescript essay titled "Colored People in Buffalo District, 1890 - 1957" by Estelle V. Anderson. The essay was written in 1973 and details African American schools, churches, and families of the Buffalo District of southwest Rockbridge County, Va., one of six former magisterial districts which included such communities and locales as Collierstown, Bolivar Mills or Murat, North and South Buffalo, Black's Creek, and Kyger's Hill. The essay includes lists of family names and biographical sketches of a number of the African American community members. Churches mentioned are Cedar Hill Baptist Church, a church on Black's Creek, the former Collierstown Baptist Church, Oxford and Collierstown Presbyterian Churches. A number of former African American schools are also described.

An album has photos of a May Pole in front of the Williamsburg Court House on Duke of Gloucester St. The papers include material for some of his children, particulary Elizabeth Mallory Lee (Mrs. John Walston Henderson), Peticolas Lee (Mrs. Robert Edward Lee), Mary King Lee, and Edward M. Papers of the Ley-Robison-Blosser families documenting people and places of northern WV and southwestern PA; subjects include businesses, Cheat River recreation (they were Cheat River residents), WWII (Blosser letters), and the Pridevale Iron Co. Christian Ley settled and lived on the Cheat River from the 1850s to 1880s. His daughter Lillie married George Robison. The Robison couple lived on a section of Christian Ley's Land on the Cheat, where they managed a hotel, among other activities, around 1880-1920. The daughter of Lillie and George Robison, Eleanor, married Hugh Blosser, a coal miner, in 1917; they lived on the Cheat as well, operating a marina on the lake.
