This collection consists of an one page matted autograph letter, July 19, 1825, from James Madison, Montpellier, Virginia, to Ashbury Dickins(1780-1861), thanking Dickins in the third person form for sending him a copy of his oration given on the fourth of July. Madison praises the work highly, "J.M. had previously an opportunity of reading it in the newspapers. But it well deserves a place among the select of those anniversary discourses in the more conservative form now given to it." A copy of Dickins' Oration, delivered in the Capitol in the city of Washington, on the Fourth of July, 1825, by Asbury Dickins, and printed in Washington by Gales & Seaton, can be found in the Madison Collection of the Rare Books Division, University of Virginia Library (AC901.M33v.12, no.6).

This collection consists of an autograph one page letter, August 4, 1827, from James Madison, Rector of the University of Virginia, Montpellier, to Nicholas Philip Trist, Secretary of the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia, Tufton near Charlottesville, concerning the vacancy that occurred at the University when Thomas Hewitt Key, Professor of Mathematics, returned to England in 1827. Charles Bonnycastle, Professor of Natural Philosophy, filled Key's vacant chair in 1827, and Robert M. Patterson eventually replaced Bonnycastle as Professor of Natural Philosophy.

The Mason papers consist of 26 items, 1798-1847, chiefly correspondence between General John Mason, one time Superintendent of the Indian Department and his son, James Murray Mason(1798-1871), the U.S. Senator and Confederate diplomat, on personal and financial affairs. Six of the letters are from John Mason's friend, Richard Rush(1780-1859), in London, England, as minister to Great Britain, discussing political affairs in Londonand the United States, including frequent mention of the American Colonization Society, the African Institution, William Wilberforce, and Sir Charles McCarthy. One letter, dated March 13, 1813, is from Ely Magruderin Barbados, West Indies, to James Madison, answering charges that he acted as a secret agent of the United Statesgovernment and commenting on wartime conditions there. Another from Senator John Taylor of Caroline, 1803, requests information on a Virginia-Maryland boundary dispute; and three 1847 letters discuss the collection of a debt by John Jordan Crittenden. There is also a facsimile of the Non-Importation Resolutions of 1765.

The larger collection consists of the original materials and 7 additions including the most recent one represented in this finding aid.

This collection consists of ca. 130 letters, ca. 1832-1882, chiefly correspondence among members of the Rives familyof " Castle Hill, " Cobham, Virginia. The main correspondents are William Cabell Rives(1793-1868), Judith Page Walker Rives(1802-1882), William Cabell Rives, Jr.(1825-1889), and Amelie Louise Rives Sigourney(1832-1873); other correspondents include Francis Robert Rives(1822-1891), Alfred Landon Rives(1830-1903), Ella Rives(1834-1892), John Reuben Thompson(1823-1873), and Fitzedward Hall(1825-1901).

This collection of Virginiana and Americana, 1669 (1830-1965) 1993, consisting of ca. 200 items, was acquired by Robert S. Pace. There are correspondence, papers, newspaper clippings and other printed, 1861-1980, pertaining to the Blairand Woodburyfamilies as well as various pamphlets, 1910-1917, collected by Woodbury Blair. The next series includes Virginiana and Americana in the form of autographs, correspondence and papers, and printed. In addition to autographs of prominent persons, there are correspondence, 1946- 1961, of Judithand Arthur Hart Burlingwith prominent people; correspondence, 1908-1944, of the Marlow Coal Companyof Washington, D.C.; and, correspondence and papers of Robert S. Pace, chiefly concerning Americana and restoration. Other material consists of World War II Japanese propaganda.
