Carte du Canada et des Etats-Unis de l'Amèrique Septentrionale, 1778 1 Sheets Closed Stacks, Drawer 33

Displayed here is the third state of the "Carte des Pays...de Canada," published by Jean Baptiste Fortin who had acquired the stock of the Vaugondy firm. This map is one of the first to recognize the name of the newly formed United States, "Etats Unis," as seen by the inclusion of the phrase in the title cartouche. The map is closely related to J.B. Eliot's "Carte du Theatre de la Guerre Actuel Entre les Anglais et les Treize Colonies Unies de l'Amerique Septentrionale ..." Eliot also uses the phrase "Etats Unis" in his map, referring to his title of U.S. Engineer under his name. Both Fortin and Eliot published their maps in 1778.

Map of Canada, and the East Coast of America including Florida, Virginia, New York, North and South Carolina, as well as the course of the Mississippi River. The map was engraved by Herman Van Loon and was part of Nicholas de Fer's 'Atlas Curieux'. Includes notes and a list of coordinates for various locations on the right side, as well as locations of various Native American settlements. The cartouche notes that this copy of the map is available from I.F. Benard (Jacques-François Benard), son-in-law of Nicholas de Fer, who took over the business after de Fer's death in 1720. Benard et al continued to sell de Fer's unaltered maps into the 1740s, dating this edition from c.1720-1747, with the original made in 1702.

A.L.S. 1 page. Monticello. Lafayette expresses his affection for Nelly and her brother G.W.P. Custis -- and says he share more when he travels near her at the end of the month -- [This letter is also quoted by Nelly in letter of Nov. 22 to Eliz. Bordley Gibson]. Autograph letter signed, integral cover, postmarked "Char. Va. Nov. 10", laminated, red seal with device blurred, watermarks. Name on original manuscript appears as "Lafayette."

An invitation to Canadians to join France in aiding the United States against the British--appeals to their common French blood, recent ties with France asks them to set up their own government and join the confederacy of 13 states. Printed document, laminated, watermark (fleur de lis), printed in French, endorsed in later hand "Sent by LaFayette to Washington Presented to the Assoc. by Mr. Herbert."
