This collection contains primary and secondary resources pertaining to Robert E. Lee and the Lee family. Included are correspondences from, to, and about Lee and various family members; memorabilia, pamphlets, photographs, reminiscences, miscellaneous personal papers, family history and genealogy. The collection includes materials acquired from the Lee family and items donated to and purchased and compiled by W&L University since Lee's tenure as president of Washington College from 1865 - 1870. Adminstrative papers, such as President's Reports, etc..., from Robert E. Lee's presidency of the school may be found within the W&L University Archives. Charles Marshall to Robert E. Lee, 1865 Box 7, Folder 9

Colonel Charles Marshall, who served as an aide de camp, assistant adjutant general and military secretary to Gen. Robert E. Lee during the Civil War, wrote to Lee to respond to a request for information concerning certain campaigns during the war. The lengthy letter mostly discusses army strength, casualties, and desertions for several battles, including Petersburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Rappahannock station. He discusses General Longstreet, General Jackson, General Hood, General Ewell, General Hill, General Beauregard, General Gordon, General Early, General Breckinridge, and General Pickett among others, all in reference to army strength at different times of the war.

Maria G. Slaughter to Robert E. Lee, 1866 Box 7A, Folder 42

This letter was written by Mary G. Slaughter on February 27, 1866 to Robert E. Lee. Slaughter writes to introduce Stark Arnold to Lee as the nephew of Stonewall Jackson. She vouches for his integrity and explains his situation of desiring an education without direct means. She requests that Lee assist him in gaining an education.

Freeman Hansford Hart Collection, 1910/1965

Contains correspondence with Henry St. George Tucker regarding the maintenance of Lexington, Virginia's Col Alto estate, where Hart was residing prior to World War I. Also contains correspondane concerning WWI, including notices of military protocol. The U.S.S. Mongolia and 317th Infantry at Sea, and the medical detachment of which Hart was a part, are topics of interest.

Fortnightly Club Papers, 1900/2015

This collection consists of the organizational archives and research papers presented by members of Lexington, Virginia's Fortnightly Club, a men's club organized with the purpose of discussion of current topics and social engagement. The club was founded in 1900 after similar clubs in Newburyport, Massachusetts (also called the "Fortnightly Club") and the "Conversation Club" of Louisville, Kentucky.
