This collection contains principally scrapbooks relating to Bryan's service as U.S. ambassador to Brazil (1898-1902), Portugal (1903-1909), Belgium (1909-1911) and Japan (1911-1912) and containing newspaper clippings, press releases, photographs, postcards, greeting cards and other memorabilia. It also includes a scrapbook of family photographs, political memorabilia, and genealogy as well as political correspondence from 1879-1909.

This collection consists of the papers of Dr. Daniel Crump Buchanan on Japanese culture with some information on China, Korea, and other Asian countries generally organized by subject. The files on Japanese culture and history are arranged alphabetically by subject. They contain some significant memos and position papers on propaganda and psychological warfare against Japan during World War II. Other files on similar themes include "Espionage," "Target Operations", and "Reorientation." Also included are manuscripts of Dr. Buchanan's published works, printed matter from Dr. Buchanan's time in Japan, uncataloged published books and pamphlets in Japanese, and Japanese language and calligraphy cards, playing cards and tokens.

Newspaper clippings, mainly from Doddridge and Harrison county, concerning marriages, deaths, family histories, letters from World War I service men, nurses, and from former residents who had moved, or gone to other states to teach, including a series of letters from L.P. Willis from the Phillippine Islands and Japan. Mr.Willis was employed as a teacher and Head Of the Bureau of Education in Japan, and the Phillipines for twenty years. Also, included in the collection are tax and school tuition receipts, orders,unsigned copy of Thomas Hickman's will, deed and other papers of several members of the Hickman family of Harrison county. A photostat copy of a form letter from the State Medical Society Committee on Examination of the Medical Botany of the State addressed to Dr.P. Davis from Wheeling, 1868.

An illustrated scroll - or emakimono - of samples of masks and a record of props used in Noh theater, created circa late 19th century or early 20th century. The scroll measures nearly 30 feet in length when unrolled and is constructed of individual illustrated leaves that have been adhered together to create the scroll. When rolled, the scroll is housed in a wooden box.

Mainly letters written to Bassel from U.S. Army officers from various forts and camps in several western states and territories. There are no copies of Bassel's correspondence in the collection, but his career in the army to about 1870, his subsequent military service in Egypt, and his employment in China and Japan, ca.1874-1875, as the representative of an American ship builder, are covered in the letters. There are a few letters from Thomas Handbury, a cadet at West Point in 1862; also materials on political affairs in West Virginia, including Bassel's candidacy on the People's Party ticket for governor of West Virginia in 1892, and certificates of election returns from several counties in 1892.
