Campbell, Alexander, 1788-1866

An 1808-1809 journal with descriptions of travels in Ireland and Scotland and of Campbell's voyage to America. Specific mention is made of weather conditions, fish, birds, food rations, and quarantine of the ship on its arrival at New York City. Collection contains notes for and a list of sermons preached (1810-1814) by Campbell in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Brooks family
Correspondence, clippings, biographical sketches, photographs, artifacts, and other items relating to the family of St. George Tucker Brooke (1844-1914), a professor at West Virginia University College of Law, 1878-1909. Correspondence includes business and personal letters to and from St. George Tucker Brooke and Charles Frederick Tucker Brooke, a Rhodes Scholar and Shakespearean authority at Yale; letters between Francis (Frank) Brooke to Mrs. Mary Brooke while he served in the U.S. and France during World War I (1918-1919); and letters from James Harold in Ireland to his son James in New York (ca. 1870). Other items include a surveyor's call book for Tucker County (1856-1857), which includes notes on the Tucker-Randolph County boundary; "A Narrative of My Life: for My Family," 1763-1849 by Judge Francis T. Brooke; a manuscript recipe book (1814); and microfilmed copy of typescript "Autobiography of St. George Tucker Brooke, Written for His Children" (reel 3). Gallaher, DeWitt Clinton, 1845-1926

Manuscripts diary of Mr. D. C. Gallaher, a young Virginian who went to Berlin to study law and German in 1869-1870. From August 1 to August 14, 1869 he was in various parts of New York. From August 25 to September 12 he toured Ireland, England, and Scotland. From September 12 to April 5, 1870 he was in Germany, most of the time in Berlin, attended law lectures and studying German. The diary was finished from a note book in Munich on August 1, 1870. Most of the 110 pages are taken up with travel prior to the beginning of school in Berlin. The most interesting parts are his observations upon visiting New York.

MacMillan Albums 3 Item

MacMillan, Mary Shields, b. ca. 1800- d. ca. 1887

This collection consists of three scrapbooks with contents compiled by Mary MacMillan and her son Charles MacMillan. The first contains scenes from a trip to Ireland, containing Mary MacMillan's pencil sketches of scenes and prints of Ireland mostly by James Howard Burgess. The second contains poetry and calligraphy from Mary MacMillan and others as well as collections of dried and pressed marine marine algae or seaweed, watercolors sketches and cartoons. The third consists of mica paintings made in India for British tourists, and were most likely collected by Mary's son Charles.

Gainer, Patrick W.
Archives of an eminent folklorist and professor of English at West Virginia University. Manuscripts include field folklore collections, lecture notes, book manuscripts, correspondence, student papers, and folksong arrangements. There are also materials regarding Gainer's position as director of South Atlantic USO activities during World War II and a journal of a folksong collecting trip to Ireland in 1961. Also one hundred and fifty-three audio tapes containing vocal and instrumental folk music, folklore and oral history, recorded in West Virginia and in Scotland and Ireland. Nearly half of the material is performed by Gainer himself. The collection also includes news clippings relating to folklore and Gainer's career, as well as a variety of photographs, film clips and personal awards and memorabilia.

The collection includes manuscript materials (correspondence, land warrant, accounts, receipts, petition and will) and printed and typescript materials (invitations, broadside, newspaper and magazine clippings). Subjects of the various items include sale and survey of land; schools, churches, estates, comment on and description of agriculture, social and economic conditions in Kentucky, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, California, Morgantown, Fairmont, and Wheeling, WV, and Ireland; westward migration [1849]; gold mining, enslaved Africans; and business and family affairs.
