Papers of Waitman T. Willey (1811-1900), lawyer, senator, and founding father of West Virginia. A resident of Monongalia County, Willey was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1850, the Secession Convention of 1861, the First Wheeling Convention of 1861, and the Constitutional Convention of 1871. He was U.S. Senator from the Restored Government of Virginia (1861-1863) and Senator from West Virginia (1863-1871). Includes several thousand pieces of incoming correspondence to Waitman T. Willey dating from 1833 to 1900 (bulk 1859-1869) concerning political, social, and economic affairs. There is much material on the temperance movement in Virginia (1845-1860), the Civil War, and the statehood movement in West Virginia. Also includes miscellaneous financial records (1837-1869) and legal papers (1820-1856); Willey's diary (entries from 1830-1899, posthumously added clippings through 1908); and other material. Records related to the Forbes, Anderson, and Hildebrand families of northern West Virginia. The Forbes and Anderson families were related by marriage, some of whom lived in Morgantown; the Hildebrands were neighbors of the Forbes family in Morgantown. The Forbes and Anderson papers include genealogical information, correspondence, greeting cards, photographs, and other material. The Hildebrand papers include correspondence, World War I and World War II records, photographs, medical and financial records, and newspaper clippings, among other material. Of special interest in the collection is a 24 November 1862 proclamation issued by Virginia Governor Francis H. Pierpont regarding the West Virginia statehood bill before the United State Congress at that time.

This collection contains the photographs of Earl Palmer, an award-winning photographer from Cambria, Virginia, whose work depicted the landscape and traditional culture of rural Appalachia in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Materials date frome 1880 to 1989, but are primarily from the 1940s to the 1970s. The collection is divided among the following series: photographs, duplicate photographs, written materials, oversize photographs, and artifacts.

The one reel of microfilm contains the typescript notes and manuscripts of Edgar Wakefield Hassler on Western Pennsylvania history during the period of French and Indian War and the War of Independence.

Papers from Dr. John Renton, who was an Emeritus Professor of Geology at West Virginia University. This collection includes a variety of materials, such as maps, illustrations, transparencies, essays, and articles, all pertaining to his work in the geology department. A wide range of topics are covered, and the level spans from basic, introductory geological concepts to academic research. Renton also created regionally specific resources, such as lessons on Appalachian and West Virginian geology (Series 1 and 2). This collection is arranged into two series. The first series consists of educational resources Renton created to be used by West Virginian K-12 Earth Science teachers, and in his own instructive undertakings. The second series contains other materials created and collected by Renton over the course of his career, such as unpublished educational and research manuscripts; published academic articles; and various lessons and field trip guides.
