Description:
Special Collections and Archives at James Branch Cabell Library collects rare and unique research materials documenting 20th and 21st century Richmond and Central Virginia. Our holdings include manuscripts, personal papers, photograph collections, oral histories, and various institutional records. Books and other published materials include nationally significant special collections of book art and comic arts; rare books and periodicals; late 19th and early 20th-century architecture and decorative arts; and Richmond history, imprints, literature and serial publications from the late 20th century to the present. The historical records of VCU and its Monroe Park Campus predecessor, the Richmond Professional Institute, are found here as well.

Poetry Society of Virginia records

The collection consists of materials created and acquired by members of the Poetry Society of Virginia and document the activities of the organization. Contents date from 1922 to 2018, with the bulk of the collection dating from the 1970s to the 2010s. Materials include annual contest files, student contest files, executive committee records, correspondence, membership lists, newsletters, event files, fliers, bylaws, information about individual poets, poems, and printouts from the organization's website.

Betsy Brinson collection of AIDS epidemic exhibit materials

The bulk of the collection consists of oral history interviews conducted by Betsy Brinson in 2016 and 2017 with people who volunteered and worked with affected communities in the Richmond area during the height of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and 1990s. There are seven different interviews on cassette, all about thirty to forty minutes long. The interviews are digitized with links to the files in Series 1.

The 4 boxes of archival materials include Bryant Mangum publications (books, chapters, articles, notes, reviews, etc.); draft samples of Bryant Mangum's Fitzgerald books; Alice Adams items that are unpublished, as well as published but uncollected stories and reviews of all works; and two versions of Irwin Shaw's "The Girls in Their Summer Dresses." This collection is partially processed. It is available to use in part or in whole. The collection contains approximately 700 zines that were acquired from multiple sources and donors since the 1990s. Self-published by individuals or produced by small groups, the zines represent a wide range of genres including political, personal, DIY, and art zines among others. Many of the zines were created in Virginia or have a connection to Virginia Commonwealth University, but there are also hundreds of zines from other locations, primarily in the United States. Zines that were offered during the annual Richmond Zine Festival since its inception in 2007, are featured prominently in the collection.
