Special Collections is located in Carol M. Newman Library at Virginia Tech. Special Collections includes manuscript collections, rare books, and the University Archives, as well as state, local and historical maps and photographs. This collection includes research notes, manuscripts, typescript drafts, working copies and galley proofs for books and articles written by Virginia Tech's Alumni Distinguished Professor of History James I. Robertson Jr., 1982-2001. Large collection of notes, papers, and correspondence relateing to Virginia Civil War counties and units. Also contains a small set of general materials which includes items related to the preservation of lands adjacent to Manassas National Battlefield Park.

The Rick Boucher Papers, 1968-2017, document his career in the Virginia State Senate, 1975-1982, and in the United States Congress as the Representative of Virginia's 9th District, 1983-2011. The collection consists of press releases, Boucher's writings, mailers he distributed, information about his campaigns and elections, scripts of speeches he gave, news clippings about him and issues he worked on, correspondence, information about grants that he worked on, and audiovisual materials including photographs, VHS tapes, video reels, audio cassettes, DVDs, awards, and digital files. Materials primarily span from the beginning of his political career in 1975 to his retirement from Congress in 2011.

The Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club (RATC) Records document the management of the club from its founding in 1932. The collection includes the club newsletters, board minutes, former officers' and members' records, NPS and RATC acquisition information, conservation issues, management plans, histories of the club, scrapbooks, and photographs. The RATC continues its original mission to maintain and protect the Appalachian Trail (AT), and the club covers over 120 miles of the AT, including McAfee Knob, Dragon's Tooth, and Tinker Cliffs.

The Virginia Academy of Science (VAS) Records includes VAS publications dating from 1939-2004 and also includes manuscript and published versions of various Academy histories. The Academy Archives also includes correspondence, report, and minutes of section and of ad hoc and standing committees, annual financial statements, photographs and clippings, by-laws, and constitutions, records of special projects such as the visiting scientists program (supported by National Science Foundation grants), the Virginia Institute for Scientific Research and the Virginia Museum of Science.
