The Sally H. Thomas papers (1968-2010; 76 cubic feet) document the political career of Sally H. Thomas as a member of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors, as well as a member of the Albemarle County School Board. The materials in this collection mainly consist of Albemarle County Board of Supervisors correspondence, reports, budgets, site plans and maps, city-planning documents and publications, and related printed materials. Some of the topics emphasized are conservation, rural preservation, community services, infrastructure, and transportation planning as key features of Sally Thomas' career. Materials mostly include Albemarle County planning with some Charlottesville city planning documents, and Albemarle County School Board budgets and plans as well. The materials document the development needs of the Albemarle/Charlottesville area as population and economic growth increased, and highlight the attempt to balance economic and residential development with environmental conservation needs and the interests of rural areas.

This collection contains materials of various formats used and created by historian Dr. Ronald Lewis throughout his career. There are records and course materials from classes taught by Dr. Lewis at the University of Delaware and, primarily, at West Virginia University (WVU). It includes other documents relating to his work as a faculty advisor to graduate students in WVU's history department. There is extensive documentation of his research, most of which was done on Appalachian history and West Virginia coal mining, including articles he has written, facsimiles of primary and secondary sources used in his research, and A/V materials like oral histories. Records generated from Dr. Lewis's scholarly activities are included, such as book and article reviews and conference presentations. There are also materials relating to his other professional pursuits, such as his membership in historical organizations and correspondence with other professionals in the field. This collection provides a broad overview of the work of an historian in an academic institution.

The dates provided are reflective of material creation, except within the Welsh Miners and Scott's Run subseries. These dates, listed in folder titles, reflect the content and were determined by the donor when he created and titled these files. Please be aware that the dates may not be accurate for every item within the folder/box but rather reflect the general timeframe of the subject matter.

Born digital and audiovisual materials exist within the collection as floppy disks, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, and cassettes.

Addendum of 2024 May 29 includes similar materials but reflects Dr. Lewis's more recent work. There are materials relating to his work as a professor and faculty member, the development of two books and other publications, and documentation of his career. Common formats include lecture notes, facsimiles of research sources, and correspondence; digital materials exist within the addendum as floppy disks, zip disks, and CDs.

This collection includes materials from Dr. Emory L. Kemp's career of researching, documenting, and preserving historic structures. Kemp was a practicing civil engineer from 1952-1959, then taught civil engineering, historic preservation, and the history of technology from 1962-2003 at West Virginia University. He served as an expert consultant for the preservation of many historic engineering structures, including bridges, waterways, and mills. He also published regularly and remained active in several professional organizations.

There are photographs from Chapters 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 of Kemps book Essays on the History of Transportation and Technology including the Weston and Gauley bridge Turnpike; Pulaski Skyway, New Jersey; origins of the modern suspension bridge; Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway and introduction of the French Needle Dam to the United States. Other photographs include United Kingdom suspension bridges, the Cincinnati Suspension Bridge and a variety of French Suspension Bridges.

There are original documents and drawings pertaining to Bull Creek Bridge, Wood and Pleasant Counties, West Virginia; materials on Wheeling suspension bridge; Fairmont Suspension Bridge; Bridgeport Concrete Arch bridge; Baltimore and Ohio railroad roundhouses and stations; railroad bridges and trestles; various West Virginia suspension bridges; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania suspension bridge (Fairmount); and French and North American suspension bridges. There are materials of early industries from Cass, West Virginia; Kaymoor, West Virginia; and Berkeley and Morgan Counties, West Virginia. Also contains prints of mills and bridges including Jackson's Mill, Reem's Creek, and the mill on Antietam Road.

Interesting items of note are a collection on Fairbank Oil and the Oil Museum of Canada; patent photos for Kemp's book on patents; papers on the origins of Ontario oil, preserving covered bridges, industrial archaeology and various other topics; booklets produced by Kemp on "Bridge Engineering History" and "Wheeling Custom House"; and a clipped magazine article from Family Magazine on "Chain Bridge Over the Potomac."

Family papers compiled by Katherine Williams of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. Most of the papers are of the James H. Taylor family of Clarksburg, West Virginia dating from the 19th century. There are also records of the Irwin family including a genealogy, and the Civil War letters of private George Irwin, a soldier in Company F, 95th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Other families documented include the Redman and Summers families. The collection includes letters, autograph books, family business records, genealogies, photographs, and other material.

Papers of Gary S. Weiner, documenting his personal and family history, and his collecting interests in the Lynch family and the history of Clarksburg and Harrison County, West Virginia. The Weiner family papers include letters written to Gary Weiner (ca. 1960-2005) and correspondence and printed materials about Clarksburg Iron and Steel Company (ca. 1980-1999), among other items. The Lynch family papers include correspondence between Gretchen and Lawrence Lynch (ca. 1905-1960), various notebooks and diaries (ca. 1910-1960), and Lynch family photographs (ca. 1860s-1939), among other items. Materials related to the history of Clarksburg and Harrison County include: correspondence to Clarksburg families, such as the Anderson/Freeland family (ca. 1880-1992); Fourco Glass Company's Clearlite Window Glass advertisements (1936-1937); and Washington Irving High School materials (1920s and 1960s), among other items. Additional materials include a Victorian photograph album stand containing pictures of European royalty (ca. 1880-1886), sheet music (1900-1940), and correspondence from Noel A. P. Hyde or family (1890s-1910s); a pilot log (1998); a blue diary which includes references to travel between and experiences in Clarksburg and eastern cities, including Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Atlantic City (1925); Ella M. Stealey's ledger of her account with the Eureka Loan and Building Association (1899); Bella Spritzer's autograph album (1920); a brown diary which includes references to the unknown author's work at Hope Natural Gas Company, church activities, WWI events, and time at Camp Meade (now Fort George G. Meade in Maryland) where the author was first assigned to the 154th Depot Brigade, 314th Infantry, 79th Division. (1918-1920); and a small blue and yellow notebook (undated).

There is also historical information on fraternities at West Virginia University (WVU), beginning with Gamma and Delta Prime at Monongalia Academy, heavily emphasizing the beginnings of the Delta Tau Delta chapter at WVU in the early 1900s, and concluding with information about other WVU fraternities (covers 1882-1967).

This collection contains an estimated nine hundred thousand printed photographs, negatives, and slides captured by professional photographers at Gitchell's Studio in Charlottesville between 1972 and 2016. The collection provides provides a photographic history of the Charlottesville, Virginia including the University of Virginia and includes printed photographs, negatives, slides, and photographs saved on CD-Rs and DVD-Rs. The collection is organized by year and event. Most of the content is commissioned photographs paid for by Charlottesville and Albemarle County residents or businesses. The subject matter of the photographs spans wedding portraits, personal portraits, family portraits, corporate events, commercial scenes, sporting events and graduations for the University of Virginia and area high schools, church events, University of Virginia sports, and the Dogwood Festival. This guide only describes accession 2017-0077 (addition 1) of the collection and does not include a description of the original deposit.
