This series also includes some papers of Gardner and Eleanor's first son and Armistead's elder brother, Gardner Jr.

This collection consists of ca. 3,000 items, (13 Hollingers and 15 oversize bound volumes), ca. 9 linear shelf feet), ca. 1907-1949, chiefly the genealogical correspondence and research of William D. Ligon, Jr.concerning the Ligon family. The collection contains correspondence, newsclippings, photographs, post cards, photostats, forms, genealogical charts, book reviews, Christmas card albums, and printed material, much of it mounted in bound volumes and scrapbooks. Also present is the typescript and illustrations for the book The Ligon Family and Connections,the product of all of the research and genealogical inquiries conducted by Ligon through his correspondence.

Other highlights include Herrick's consulting files for projects such as NASA's Project Mercury, the film ""The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951), and private industry. This collection is part of the Archives of American Aerospace Exploration at Virginia Tech.

Artwork, photography, and papers of James Edward Davis, an artist born in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Davis studied art at Princeton University and had a prolific and varied artistic career, being particularly noted for his experimental abstract films involving color, light, and movement. This collection contains paintings, sketches, mobiles, photographic prints, transparencies, memoirs, notes on Frank Lloyd Wright and John Marin, and other material. There are addenda to this collection, which include memoirs and other writings, correspondence, material regarding Julia Davis and John W. Davis (relatives of James Davis), and other material. 89 Linear Feet Variety of container sizes based on photograph sizes and material types. Over-sized items are housed in drawers.

The Historical Photograph Collection is largely comprised of materials created by or for the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. Some of the earliest photographs of the estate were created and sold to visitors by the Association as a means of income. Those efforts helped to establish an important collection of 19th century views. The collection spans the 1850s to 2000s and includes over 140 linear feet of analog material providing a visual history of the Mansion, outbuildings, tombs, grounds, events, visitors, collection objects, personnel, and changes throughout the estate.

This collection, compiled by Richard Wright, focuses on the evolution of the Black American image in print media, cartoons and comics. Wright organized his own historical timeline titled "Good Clean Fun: Blacks in Comics," also referred to as "Clean Fun: Blacks in Comics," in a series of binders with artist biographies and time period summaries. Item titles have been retained from the original labels.
