Julius J. Lankes Collection

Papers and artifacts, 1917-1946, of Julius John Lankes, artist, who lived many years of his life in Newport News, Va. Includes biographical data, notes concerning a Lankes exhibition at the College of William and Mary; printed books by Lankes; correspondence and documents concerning the publication of Virginia Woodcuts by Lankes; photocopies of letters concerning a visit to Robert Frost; photocopies of prints from Lankes woodcuts; and woodcut blocks. Additions (Sm Coll Add 12, 1996.42, 1996.55, 1997.13 and 1997.14) include copies of twelve letters from Sherwood Anderson to Lankes (mostly concerning Lankes' woodcuts), photocopies of woodcut designs and correspondence, as well as a reproduction of a Lankes self-portrait. The additions also include two checklists: Burl N. Osborn, " A Descriptive Checklist of the Woodcut Bookplates of J. J. Lankes (Millersville, Pa., 1937) and "The Descriptive List of J. B. Lankes' Christmas Cards, 1959-1983 as well as four original signed woodcuts.

The University of Virginia Anatomy Laboratory Lantern Slides collection

This collection is divided into two series. The first series, "Keystone View Company anatomy slides", is a nearly complete set of 3 x 5 inch lantern slides that depict black-and-white photographic images showing various parts of human anatomy. The Keystone View Company most likely produced and sold this slide set sometime between 1920 and 1950. The second series, "Cephalapagus presentation slides", consists of 3 x 5 inch lantern slides that were used in a presentation at an academic conference. The presentation was titled, "Dissection of a Human Craniopagus Parietalis". The presentation was given by Robert B. Moore and Arthur H. Wasser of the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1959 at the annual meeting of the Virginia Academy of Science.

Lillian Thomas Pratt Personal Papers (SC-07)

The collection documents the formation of the Lillian Thomas Pratt Collection of Fabergé decorative artworks at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Bequeathed to the museum upon her death in 1947, Pratt's Fabergé collection consistently remains one of the highlights of the museum's permanent collection. Pratt purchased most of her Fabergé collection from the Schaffer Collection and Hammer Galleries, both of New York City, in the 1930s and 1940s. Comprised of correspondence, invoices, price tags, and detailed item descriptions, this collection illuminates Pratt's mind as a collector, as well as her relationship with one of her dealers, Alexander Schaffer.

Transcription: [double-headed eagle] The Schaffer Collection of Russian Imperial Art Treasures ROCKEFELLER CENTER, NEW YORK October 29, 1935 #1017 Unusually beautiful solid gold cigarette case, elegantly embossed with sprays of leaves into which are mounted cabochon-cut rubies of beautiful color. A ruby of the same color, mounted in gold, serves as the catch which opens the case. It is signed by "Carl Fabergé", famous jeweler to the Russian Imperial family, who, because of his excellent craftsmanship and artistry, has often been termed the "Cellini" of the nineteenth century. From the belongings of Nicholas II, the late Czar of Russia. From the Alexander Palace at Tsarskoye Selo.

Transcription: [double-headed eagle] The Schaffer Collection of Russian Imperial Art Treasures ROCKEFELLER CENTER, NEW YORK October 29, 1935 #1041 Beautifully conceived and executed miniature frame of the supreme quality achieved by "Carl Fabergé". Mounted on a nephrite pedestal of pure classical inspiration, it is encircled at the top with a gold wreath mounted with rubies. From it hang festoons of leaves minutely chased and carved out of green and yellow gold. The gold enrichment of the base is also in two shades of gold and here is finely wrought with acanthus leaves. The frame which is double to hold two miniatures, is enclosed with a round wreath, carved out of greenish gold and at the top is mounted with a ribbon, rubies and an oval terminal pearl. It was made by the celebrated court jeweler to the Russian Imperial Court, "Carl Fabergé", who has often been termed the "Cellini" of the nineteenth century. From the Alexander Palace at Tsarskoye Seloe.

Edward L. Stone/Borderland Coal Company Papers 1895-1937

These papers fill 455 special four-inch Hollinger storage boxes (ca. 150 linear feet) and span the years 1895-1937. There are three major series: Edward L. Stone's papers re his personal life and diversified business, professional, and civic concerns; papers concerned with his principal business, the Stone Printing and Manufacturing Company of Roanoke, Virginia; and those papers concerned with the Borderland Coal Company of West Virginia and Kentucky of which Stone was the principal officer for many years. Because these series basically are composed of Stone's personal papers, and because there are interrelationships between material in one series and that in another, the series have been maintained in the boxes in the order in which they were found.

Leon A. Pryzbylinski, Collector, Pamphlets and Other Material regarding Labor History and the Cooperative Movement

Mr. Pryzbylinski, a resident of Mt. Carmel, Pennsylvania, was a coal miner and actively promoted trade unionism and socialism in his area from about 1915 to 1930. When many mines in the anthracite coal fields closed in the early 1930s, he stopped working as a miner and became engaged in radio repair work. He was also interested in the co-operative movement. He encouraged this movement in the Mt. Carmel area and was president of the local co-operative. The collection includes 363 pamphlets concerning socialism, trade unionism, and the welfare of the working class. There are also clippings and magazine articles on these subjects. Included is a copy of the National Berger Memorial Edition of the Milwaukee Leader from August 7, 1930, and a typescript mimeograph copy of the proceedings of a meeting entitled "Who is Calvin Coolidge?" chaired by Oswald Garrison Villard, April 12, 1927. This group of materials comprises 8 boxes. Two boxes contain the material collected by Mr. Pryzbylinski on the co-operative movement. Includes the cooperative league's publication, Cooperation, and Consumer cooperation for 1929-1939; cooperative Association yearbooks; 67 pamphlets on the cooperative movement; newspaper and magazine clippings; and one bound volume, no. IX, of the Cooperative Builder, published in Superior, Wisconsin, for 1934.

Artwork, photography, and papers of James Edward Davis, an artist born in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Davis studied art at Princeton University and had a prolific and varied artistic career, being particularly noted for his experimental abstract films involving color, light, and movement. This collection contains paintings, sketches, mobiles, photographic prints, transparencies, memoirs, notes on Frank Lloyd Wright and John Marin, and other material. There are addenda to this collection, which include memoirs and other writings, correspondence, material regarding Julia Davis and John W. Davis (relatives of James Davis), and other material.
