Dr. Edward J. Van Liere, the first dean of the West Virginia University School of Medicine, was a scientist, physician, and professor of physiology. He served the School of Medicine for more than fifty years as both professor and administrator. Papers chiefly include correspondence files, subject and research files, medical articles and publications, photographs, and files related to the creation and development of the medical center and school of medicine at WVU and to Dr. Van Liere's personal research and scholarship. Materials date from the 1920s to the 1970s and are still arranged in their original file folders.

Papers of J. Davitt McAteer documenting his advocacy for mining and other occupational safety. A lawyer and expert on mine safety and health issues, he served as an Assistant Labor Secretary for the Mine Safety and Health Administration from 1993 to 2000. McAteer was also appointed lead investigator into the Upper Big Branch Mine Disaster by Governor Manchin in 2010. The collection includes accident investigation reports, conference files, correspondence, health and safety manuals, mine disaster historical files, press clippings, publications, and reports, among other material.

Addendum of 2026 March -- Personal Property Books

This addendum was formerly its own collection, A&M 3886. This addendum consists of 175 personal property tax ledgers (each box contains one ledger) from 1851-1954. These ledgers contain information on citizens of Monongalia County by district, and volumes prior to 1863 contain information on enslavement and freedpeople.

Addendum to the Papers of Hardy Cross Dillard [d]

The bulk of this addition to the Hardy Cross Dillard Papers consists of his correspondence with personal as well as professional acquaintances for the years 1910-1971. Frequent correspondents include Phillip Jessup, Myres S. McDougal, Charlotte Kohler and Eberhard Deutsch, and occasional correspondents are such prominent figures as Robert Kennedy, Dean Rusk, John Stennis and George Kennan. Other legal scholars with whom Dillard corresponded include Lon Fuller, Arnold Wolfers and John Bassett Moore. These papers also contains several of Dillard's speeches, most of which deal with international relations. Several files pertain to his law practice, including the Almond v. Day case. Finally, several folders document Dillard's activities in university and alumni organizations.
