Description:

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library administers over 13 million manuscripts, 3.6 million items in the University archives, and 325,000 rare books, as well as approximately 5,000 maps, over 4,000 broadsides; more than 250,000 photographs and small prints; over 8,000 reels of microfilm; and substantial holdings of audio recordings, motion picture films, and ephemera.

The major emphasis of the Department’s collections are American history and literature, with additional substantive collections in Virginiana, British literature, African-American history, book arts, the history of sporting and World War I, among others. In addition, the library serves as the University Archives, holding records of historic significance to UVA.

Albert Frederick Wilson papers 1.5 Cubic Feet 3 legal document boxes and 1 oversize folder

The papers chiefly consist of letters Albert Frederick Wilson (1883-1940) sent to his mother in New Jersey while a student at the University of Virginia. There is also some correspondence from Wilson's father and grandfather; family photographs; and unpublished manuscripts by Wilson.

Alexander Wylie Moore miscellaneous papers, 1896-1950, 0.012 cubic feet, include correspondence, photographs, documents about Moore's service in World War I, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, and printed material. Of note is a letter from Richard E. Byrd (June 30, 1926) and a letter from the Canadian Department of Militia and Defence that lists qualifications required for volunteer service and a list of acceptable medical schools. Topics include World War I, University of Virginia, and Virginia Military Institute.

Alexandria Hospital School of Nursing records 18.4 Linear Feet

The Alexandria Hospital School of Nursing Records are comprised of 22 boxes of papers and archival material, including photographs, manuscripts, correspondence, newspaper clippings, reports, Yearbooks, nursing caps and uniforms. The collection does *not* contain official student records such as transcripts. HSL does not know where these records were transferred when the school closed.

American Lung Association of Virginia (ALAV) collection 283.4 Linear Feet

The ALAV Collection contains personal and official correspondence, financial and legal papers, minute books, organizational and scientific reports, educational publicity, photographs, and artifacts. The ALAV Collection contains exhaustive information on the administrative concerns, educational and fund-raising activities, local level activities and regional offices, and the day-to-day operations of Virginia's key agent in the control and prevention of respiratory diseases. The materials in the ALAV Collection document the growth of the organization, as well as the input of a number of notable Virginians, from the early decades of the twentieth century. The ALAV Collection contains materials of use to researchers interested in medical history, epidemiology, respiratory diseases, and the growth of state and national organizations dedicated to public health.

Arlene Keeling Collection 2.0 Linear Feet

Emerita Professor, University of Virginia School of Nursing; co-founder of the Eleanor Crowder Bjoring Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry. Includes coronary care nursing materials (1962-1975) and research data from "time-in–bed" study. Some items restricted. Also a significant collection of general nursing history materials, including 19th and early-20th century nursing practice and treatment materials, photographs, and artifacts. Original prescription orders from 1893 and 1904. Military nursing represented in Civil-War era sanitary reports, and items from the two world wars.
