Description:
The goal of Special Collections and University Archives is to preserve and make accessible collections and records of historical importance to the university, region, state, and nation. The department functions as a "learning lab" where students, faculty, and researchers can create and explore original ideas through engagement with our unique collections.

Series IV: Photographs

This series contains photographs and postcards of historical Norfolk, the Biltmore House, the Jamestown Exposition, Sherwood's high school graduation, Camp Sequoyah, the Naval Academy, chemistry professors at ODU, astronaut Scott Carpenter, a lunar eclipse, and unidentified persons. The photographs are made of both originals and photocopies.

Series V: Oversized Documents

This series contains the high school diplomas of both C.S. Sherwood Jr. and C.S. Sherwood III, Sherwood's graduating class photo, a certificate from the Virginia Society of Sons of the Revolution, membership of Phi Kappa Phi, Sherwood's college diploma, certificate of membership to the U.S. Naval Institute, specifications for the Sherwood home in Glensheallah, Portsmouth, Virginia, as well as blueprints for the Pretlow Planetarium and the new science building.

Relates primarily to Captain Charles E. Hewins (1841-1927), a Union soldier who settled in Hampton, Virginia after the war. Contains correspondence, and Civil War military papers documenting his activities in the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Series I: Correspondence

This series contains the correspondence of Charles E. Hewins with family and friends, mostly dealing with the Civil War. Some of the topics include Abraham Lincoln's assassination, General Sherman's southern campaign, and the view of the freedmen from a Unionist's perspective. Some of the letters were written while Hewins was a prisoner at Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia. The series also contains letters sent to Hewins from family and friends concerning local affairs.

Series III: Miscellaneous

This series contains miscellaneous materials, among which are a brief genealogical chart of the Hewins family and a newspaper obituary for Charles Hewins.
