Correspondence, diary, and farm account book of a Confederate officer and Pocahontas County cattleman and farmer. The correspondence deals primarily with Gatewood's activities as adjutant general and chief of staff of the West Virginia Division, United Confederate Veterans. The Civil War diary, 11 March-15 December 1865, covers action of Company F, Eleventh Virginia Cavalry, "Laurel Brigade," Rosser Cavalry Division, from Staunton to Appomattox. The farm account book, 1866-1869, also contains an account of Gatewood's Civil War experiences, including fighting in western Virginia and Jones' northwestern Virginia raid of 1863. The account book, 1801-1805, 1816, pertains to the John Rodgers estate. There are a few papers of Gatewood's father, Samuel V. Gatewood. Includes articles and letters regarding the biography of Union officer Joseph Andrew Jackson Lightburn assembled by members of the Lightburn family in response to an article written by Forrest Hill of the "Charleston Daily Mail" (reprinted in the 17 February 1994 edition of "The West Virginia Hillbilly"). The article, entitled "The Sad Saga of Lightburn's Retreat From Kanawha Valley", was a critique of Lightburn's leadership during a retreat from the Kanawha Valley during the Civil War. A 1994 letter from the Lightburn family to the Director of West Virginia Archives and History, among others, refutes the allegations set forth in Hill's article. There are other articles about Lightburn by Roy Bird Cook (1933, 1953) and Charles H. Washburn (1951).

History of the Haymond family, pioneer residents of the Palatine tract in Marion County, West Virginia. Eight letters written by William Haymond to his nephew Luther Haymond recall frontier life in the Monongahela, Tygart, Ohio, and Kanawha valleys, 1780-1793.
