Mainly handwritten notes from customers requesting items. Most notes are on slips of paper and many on torn lined notebook paper. Some customers asked Shepherd and Patton to give money or give merchandise to someone as payment for a service and put it on their account. On the reverse side of most notes there is the name of the person and date when paid.

Invoices, bills and receipts from the many wholesale businesses who furnished the merchandise for Shepherd and Patton's store. Most of the businesses were in Richmond, Virginia though a few were in Baltimore, Maryland, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and New York. These years contain threatening letters from wholesalers and others about unpaid bills which suggests that the business was struggling.

Byers, Augusta County, Virginia, including printed pictures on promissory notes and bills; receipts for the purchase of cloth, food, spices, livestock, furniture, and hardware items; receipts for the purchase and repair of farm machinery and implements; bank deposit slips for the National Valley Bank of Staunton; tax and insurance receipts; and bills for the sale and transportation of hay.

These items range from brief mention of an item purchased to several pages from a firm's account book.
