Description:

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library administers over 13 million manuscripts, 3.6 million items in the University archives, and 325,000 rare books, as well as approximately 5,000 maps, over 4,000 broadsides; more than 250,000 photographs and small prints; over 8,000 reels of microfilm; and substantial holdings of audio recordings, motion picture films, and ephemera.

The major emphasis of the Department’s collections are American history and literature, with additional substantive collections in Virginiana, British literature, African-American history, book arts, the history of sporting and World War I, among others. In addition, the library serves as the University Archives, holding records of historic significance to UVA.

This collection consists of letters written by and addressed to Thomas Jefferson, as well as architectural plans and studies that were created or endorsed by Jefferson, created by other individuals associated with him, deeds, plats, and maps, some of which pertain to the subjects of the architectural studies, and other miscellaneous materials.

Thomas Jefferson Architectural Drawings, 1769/1898 2.2 Cubic Feet

This series primarily consists of architectural studies on structures found at the University of Virginia, at Thomas Jefferson's private properties like Monticello and Poplar Forest, and studies on structures in Richmond, VA. The studies in the collection contain elevations, plans, and sections, most of which include Jefferson's specifications. These architectural drawings were created mainly by Thomas Jefferson. Some were created or augmented by John Organ, Dr. William Thorton, James Dinsmore, John Neilson, John Hartwell Cocke (possibly), Robert Mills, and Cornelia J. Randolph.

Noland, Thomas Nelson Berkeley , 1846-1913

This collection documents Thomas Nelson Berkeley Noland's time in Peru, and contains his journal, a typed transcript of the journal by Mary Noland Young, photographs (chiefly albumen prints) of items, places, and peoples in the Amazon, correspondence (including drafts and translations), and legal documents.

Thomas Nelson Berkeley Noland's Peruvian Amazon Exploration Journal, 1873/1874 1 folder(s) Box 1, Folder 4

The journal kept by Thomas Nelson Berkeley Noland describes his travels and adventures as a member of the Hydraulic Commission of Peru in the upper Amazon region while making accurate navigational charts for the tributaries of the Amazon. The Commission began their mission by leaving Iquitos, Peru, with two boats, the launch "Mairo" and the steamer, the "Tambo, with Noland being aboard the "Mairo" as the civil engineer.
