Also includes correspondence from members of the Stubbs, Saunders and Blair families; accounts and correspondence relating to his farm "Valley Front" in Gloucester County, Va. and his Alabama farm; his notes on soil and chemical experiments; papers concerning the Louisiana exhibit at Jamestown Tercentennial, 1907; and papers of Elizabeth Saunders Blair Stubbs and Mary Louise Saunders Blair. Also includes copies of the Abingdon Parish Register and the Botetourt Lodge Masonic Book, 1800-1809; and pictures of buildings and houses, mostly in Gloucester County.

Also included in the collection are prints, coats of arms, and commemorative coins.

Letters of William C. Tavenner and members of his family. The family had ties to Lewis and Harrison Counties. Tavenner's letters include both personal and military correspondence from the Civil War, most relating to his service as a soldier in the Confederate Army (as Lieutenant Colonel of the 17th Virginia Cavalry) and his death at the Battle of Monocacy. There are also letters from other members of Tavenner's family from before and after the Civil War. See "Scope and Contents" for details.

The diaries contain eye-witness accounts of Civil War battles, social commentary on life during wartime, and detailed descriptions of travel in Virginia, including trips to Montpelier and Weyer's Cave. The first diary features a detailed double-page manuscript map of the first Battle of Bull Run.
