Monongalia County (W. Va.) Assessor
Property tax ledgers of Monongalia County, Virginia (1851-1862), later West Virginia (1863-1954). There are 175 ledgers containing information collected annually regarding property owned by individual citizens of the county for purpose of taxation. Records for each year are entered by district, and for each district are listed the names of citizens in alphabetical order; from 1923 onward address information for each citizen is also included. Slave ownership and free African Americans are recorded through 1863; subsequent ledgers distinguish between white and African-American citizens. See scope and content note for detail. County court records consisting primarily of records of court proceedings including dockets, executions, orders, and fees as well as case papers and public records consisting primarily of land and property records including deeds, land, and personal property books. There are also some records of private businesses, private organizations, Sheriff's records, and voting records. This collection consists of three series and an addendum.

Documents include: a 1791 grant for lands in Monongalia County, contracted by the Governor of Virginia, Henry Lee; an 1827 land indenture - deed regarding a transaction between Evan Morgan, James Johnson, and Benjamin Jacobs, referencing 50 acres along Booth's Creek in Monongalia County; an 1840 land deed recording the transfer of George McCall's land in Monongalia County to Thomas Morgan; a survey of land on Cobuns Creek in Monongalia County dated from 1781; and an 1876 land deed from Hiel J. Evans to Charles Morgan for transfer of land in St. Clair County, Missouri.

Correspondence of Martha Brand Wolfe and Charles M. Wolfe, who operated a small farm at Morgantown. The papers include some old Monongalia County land deeds of Charles I. Brand; letters from evangelists Dr. R.E.L. Jarvis and Dr. Edward D. Fellers, together with letters of Mrs. Wolfe on religion. There are also Christmas cards, local news clippings, two Brand family autograph albums, family photographs, and a newspaper clipping book, 1881-1905.

Materials Collected by Mrs. Louise Morris, genealogist and authority on local history. The collection includes a notebook kept by J. H. Wherry, a student at Jefferson College, Pa., in 1859; a genealogy of the DeVaul, Haun, [F]ast families of Marion and Monongalia counties, 1817-1957; an essay on "Immigration" by George Whitham, 1896, favoring immigration restriction because of the increased number coming from " the Latin races of southeastern Europe;" land surveys from dead books, 1827-1933, mostly in Monongalia County: and a scrapbook of pictures, early 20th century, including WVU buildings (Martin Hall, the old library, The Drill Field area), Raven Rocks at Uffington, the Cheat River and Cooper's Rocks, Cascades on Deckers Creek, Oak Park near Masontown, White Rocks in Marion County in 1912, and numerous unidentified people.

Henderson, Noah

Personal papers of Noah Henderson of Monongalia County, West Virginia, consisting mainly of incoming correspondence and financial and legal documents from 1859 to 1926. Collection chiefly contains deeds, state and county tax receipts, a survey and plat, and oil and gas lease documents from the 1860s to the 1900s. Other financial documents from 1910 to 1926 relate to bank accounts and settlement of Henderson's estate after his death in 1920. Letters from relatives in the 1890s and 1900s primarily describe the correspondents' health and weather. Also included are several letters written to Henderson by Alpheus Garrison, a Union soldier during the Civil War in the 17th West Virginia Infantry, between 1863 and 1866. Garrison writes briefly about winter quarters, a snowball fight, food, Confederate prisoners, and his mill.
