Scope and Contents Discusses weather and crops; "I thought at one time all the hoe hands would give out but 6, they appeared to stand very well, those that had flagged I told them to moderate their gate (gait), and in the Heat of day I tell all the Hands to go to the House, give them some whiskey to drink and tell them to refresh themselves for 2 or 3 hours at a time, and give them as much meat as they could eat during the warm weather.. ."; refers to James Brown coming to look at the Lighter; "the Old Doctress woman brought Patients home... and said her foot is entirely well, but is very tender... the old woman wanted the $25 very bad, said if she went home without the money her mistress would go crazy - she says if her foot brakes out any more she will coure (cure) it for nothing... she wants to undertake Elva..."

Includes congratulatory letters and testimonials upon his retirement in 1931. Also includes correspondence, 1928-1930, of Mrs. William H. DeBell [Lucy Brockenborough Daingerfield DeBell] concerning the Colonial Dames of America; genealogical material on the Daingerfield family; and a newpaper clipping concerning the diary of John Harrower.

Typescript copy of William Henry Edwards' Autobiographical Notes. Edwards was a naturalist from Coalburgh, W. Va. And is best known for his three volume "The Butterflies of North America" (1879-1897). Earlier he had published "Voyage up the Amazon" (1847).

William Henry Gwathney Letters, 1838/1840 0.01 Linear Foot

Gwathney, William Henry

The collection consists of two letters written by Gwathney while he was a student at William and Mary. Both letters were written to his cousin, Benjamin T. Taylor of Petersburg, Virginia. In the letter dated Oct. 21, 1838. Gwathney mentions improvements to the College [Wren] building, including an improved Natural Philosophy lecture room and a comfortable chemical laboratory. He further mentions 100 students matriculated with others "coming in almost daily." In the letter dated April 4, 1840, he mentions returning to school and states "I do not dread the examinations I think so much as I do the preparation for them." He also writes "if I do not succeed this time I will throw my books into the fire and never more look inside of one of the like kind."

William Henry Teagle to Frederick Teagle, 1838 Box 2, Folder 9, Item 3

A letter, dated November 22, 1838, from [William?] Henry Teagle to his brother, Frederick B. Teagle, in Williamsburg, Virginia. Teagle mentions the recent death of their sister, Emeline, as well as the death of their mother, Susan. He writes, "Dear Brother, there is but few of us now remaining and we the oldest, we should endeavour to work together for each other good, and prepare for that prepaired place which is beyond the reach of the eye of man."

The personal business papers of William Hereford McGinnis (1855-1930), a Beckley lawyer who was prosecuting attorney of Raleigh County, 1892-1896, a senator in 1902, judge of the Supreme Court of Appeals, 1922-1924, chairman for a number of years of the executive committee of the Democratic Party in Raleigh County, and delegate to the national convention in 1920. There are case papers, correspondence and other records of the Hatcher-McGinnis Law Firm, 1834-1930; family photographs; and materials relating to the Methodist Church and World War I.
