Papers, chiefly 1917-1941, of anthropologist David Ives Bushnell, Jr., including correspondence concerning his research on Indians in North America; diaries, address lists, specimen lists, photographs, magazines, pamphlets, and maps pertaining to his work. Also includes correspondence of his mother, Belle Johnston Bushnell. The collection also contains a typescript of the journal of Rudolph Friederich Kurz; letters written by William Cullen Bryant (concerning Thanatopsis), William Henry Harrison (one concerning the death of Tecumseh), Horace Greeley (concerning Uncle Tom's Cabin), and Thomas Say; and includes two letters, 1798-1799, written to Rene Auguste Chouteau.

This series contains papers, 1810-1943, of the Hall and Moore families of New York, Richmond, Va. and Williamsburg, Va. Includes wills, estate papers, legal and financial transactions, 1810-1915, of Jacob Hall, Sarah Hall and Cunningham Hall; and Bishop Richard Channing Moore, Virginia Moore, Harriet Glenworth Moore, Margaretta Moore and Louise Moore. Contains correspondence, 1854-1876, between Zebulon S. Farland and Ellen Douglas Gordon Farland; letters, 1906-1928, to Margaret (Farland) Hall, from her children, Emily Hall, Channing Hall, Joseph Hall, and John Lesslie Hall concerning education and World War I; and correspondence, 1887-1889, between Margaret (Farland) Hall and John Lesslie Hall, Sr. The collection also includes teaching notes, professional writings, and alumni correspondence with John Lesslie Hall, Sr. Prominent correspondents of Hall include Lyon G. Tyler, Thomas Nelson Page, Joseph Dupuy Eggleston and Basil Gildersleeve.

Chiefly business correspondence and receipts, 1890-1899, of members of the Bucktrout and Braithwaite families of Williamsburg, Va. Among the correspondents are Hypolite Repiton, R. W. Bucktrout, D. Braithwaite, Richard M. Bucktrout and James Braithwaite.

Papers of the family of Socrates Maupin (1809-1871), professor at the University of Virginia, including letters to him, and correspondence of his son, Chapman Maupin (1846-1900), during the Civil War and while studying in Europe. There are also letters and ephemera relating to Chapman Maupin's interest in his Washington forebearers, and deeds, some of which concern other ancestors. The bulk of the papers, 1850-1870, are letters received by Peter Grayson Washington (d. 1872), brother-in-law of Socrates Maupin, primarily while serving as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, 1853-1857. Most of the letters, many of which are from Congressmen or government officials, are of a routine nature and relate to political patronage, Democratic politics, and the various responsibilities of the Treasury Department. Later letters relate to Washington's work as a claims agent in Washington, D.C., and to his investments in New York City.
