Records of the Preston County court, consisting almost entirely of land records such as maps, surveys, plats, deeds, and indentures. There are also some personal papers and correspondence of Preston County residents, including Israel Baldwin and Julius K. Monroe, and the Fairfax family. Some photographs from this collection have been digitized.

Van Hall, Historian, Microfilm Collection of Tax Records for Virginia Counties and Other Material

Van Beck Hall, a professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh, collected these records to support his research for a forthcoming book The Political Economy of Virginia, 1790-1830 [as of October 2019]. The majority of the records are on 57 reels of microfilm and contain land tax and personal property tax records for southeastern and central Virginia counties (1771-1861). Examples of counties include Caroline, Fairfax, Gloucester, Hanover, Prince George, and Stafford, among others. Miscellaneous records on 5 reels of microfilm include a report from the Virginia Library Board (1916-1917), lists of state and county officials (1780-1865), records of arms delivered (1792-1798), tobacco inspections (1795-1813), insurance declarations (1796-1821), and a doctoral dissertation about Maine's separation from Massachusetts (1966). Additionally, 3 reels of microfilm contain the Journal of the Senate of the Commonwealth of Virginia (1776-1832) and 8 reels of microfilm contain the Journal of the House of Delegates of the Commonwealth of Virginia (1790-1831).

Stuart Family Papers

Papers of John and Lewis Stuart, 1785-1823, and of Samuel Price, 1830-1879. Price's papers include mainly legal and business correspondence related to Price's law practice in Lewisburg, West Virginia. The Stuart papers concern settlement in Greenbrier County, land transactions, and family matters. The collection includes lawyer's fee books and account books for general merchandise, ca.1830-1880. There are also printed booklets of court briefs, pamphlets concerning "the slavery question" and railroads, and several Congressional documents.

Allen (1813/12/03 - 1875/07/16), a Hardy County lawyer, Jacksonian Democrat, and Circuit Court Judge in Hardy and Grant Counties (active ca. 1852-1865, 1872-1875). Also includes the papers of Allen's second wife, Caroline Williams Allen (d. 1907), several of Allen's children, and other related people, and a large group of 19th century advertising memorabilia. This series includes eleven subseries which highlight Bickley's research on black history in West Virginia and to a smaller extent black history in general. The subseries include her work on black history for many West Virginia counties with her research being more extensive for Cabell, Jefferson, and Kanawha Counties which have their own subseries.
