This collection contains an accounting booklet of rents paid by Samuel and Thomas Rankin and others to a Thomas Bateson of Londonberry, Irelandand others. Clues in the booklet suggest that a flour mill was being rented. At some point the account book was sent to the Wilson family of Rockbridge County, Virginia. The collection includes contemporary notes on the booklet as well as acquisition information.

Reid Family papers

Series 1 of this collection primarily covers the period from 1763 through Samuel McDowell Reid's death in 1869. There are also a few later items dealing chiefly with his estate. The bulk of the papers deals with business matters. Documents concern such matters as the James River and Kanawha Company, the North River Navigation Company, Washington College's relationship with the Society of the Cincinnati, slavery, and the financial dealings of John Robinson and the Hare family. Series 2 is comprised of a second set of materials received at a later date. The correspondence supplements that found in Series 1. The other materials consist chiefly of court and other legal records during the 74-year period (1778-1852) in which Andrew and his son, Samuel McDowell Reid, were clerks of the court of Rockbridge County: tavern licenses, taxation lists, apprenticeship deeds, voter lists, militia rolls, invoices, etc. There are also some Washington College papers.

BILLS PREPARED FOR THE REVISION OF THE LAWS OF VIRGINIA. MS.

A committee of five, consisting of Jefferson, Thomas Ludwell Lee, George Mason, Edmund Pendleton, and George Wythe, were appointed by the Virginia Convention of 1776 to draft a revision of the Virginia laws--the genesis of Jefferson's epochal work for religious and intellectual freedom. Lee died, Mason resigned, and the work was divided among the other three. Jefferson prepared the sections on common law and statutes to 4 James I; Wythe prepared the British statutes from that date to 1776; Pendleton worked on laws passed in Virginia. The index is in Jefferson's hand, the ordinances in several other hands, probably of clerks of the committee. Jefferson indexes 126 bills, 66 of which are included in this draft. The bills were printed by Dixon and Holt, Richmond, 1784. [29]

Deeds, plats, patents, and other legal papers concerning lands in Albemarle, Fluvanna, Goochland, Henrico, and Powhatan Counties, several of which establish the chain of title to Edgehill. Deeds for land owned by the Randolph Family (Richard Randolph, Jr., Thomas Mann Randolph, Thomas Jefferson Randolph), the Eppes Family (Francis Eppes, Richard Eppes, and William Eppes), and the Nicholas Family (John Nicholas, George Nicholas, and Robert Carter Nicholas.) Papers (including correspondence, legal documents, and accounts) of James McGavock (1728-1812), his son James McGavock (1764-1838) and his grandsons James McGavock (1804-1839) and Stephen McGavock (1807-1880). Many of the papers concern lead mines at Fort Chiswell, Va, slavery, agriculture, aspects of the Revolutionary War, and other. Included are a list of parish levies before 1776; receipts for supplies issued at Fort Chiswell, Wythe County, Va. and at Fort Patrick Henry, Tenn. for an expedition, 1776-1777, against the Cherokees; and county tax and fee bills for Augusta, Bedford, Botetourt, Montgomery, Pittsylvania, Washington and Wythe counties, Va. The collection includes genealogical information on the McGavock and Boyd families and letters written by members of the Cloyd family and by John Williamson McGavock while attending the University of Virginia.
