Description:
The goal of Special Collections and University Archives is to preserve and make accessible collections and records of historical importance to the university, region, state, and nation. The department functions as a "learning lab" where students, faculty, and researchers can create and explore original ideas through engagement with our unique collections.

Included in this series are deeds of sale showing how General John Hodges acquired Wildwood and other property. Also included are wills, statements, a legal claim, and an 1809 land survey of the Western Branch land that Hodges eventually acquired. Items of special interest include a bill of sale for slaves and the 1754 will of William Hodges.

Chaired the board of the Norfolk Port and Industrial Authority, which runs Norfolk International Terminals and the Norfolk International Airport, for thirteen years and was a board member from 1962 to 1987. Served on several political campaign committees, including those of Roy B. Martin and Stanley Walker. Was very active in civic affairs, including the Norfolk Junior Chamber of Commerce, Virginia Jaycees, United States Jaycees, Tidewater Chapter of the American Red Cross, Norfolk Jewish Community Council, and the Virginia Zoological and Aquarium Society.

Sub-Series G: Pharmacy Correspondence

Contains correspondence in regard to lease information on Caplan's Pharmacy (the pharmacy owned by Caplan's father Phillip), the Medical College of Virginia (where Caplan received his pharmacy degree), and as well as other pharmacy related correspondence and notes. The correspondence ranges from 1951 to 1976 and is arranged alphabetically by subject.
