Washington and Custis Families account book, 1757/1773

This collection consists of an account book kept by the Washington and Custis families. The account book is stained and faded, having been buried during the American Civil War. It consists of 36 leaves containing George Washington's formal record of the settlement of the Daniel Parke Custis estate and of his guardianship of his stepchildren, John Parke and Martha Parke Custis and are in Washington's handwriting, 1761-1773. It also provides the inventories and proposed division of the Daniel Parke Custis estate submitted to the General Court in October 1759. Six leaves include estate accounts for Augustine Washington and are in the hand of Thomas Jett, 1766-1771.

This collection contains an accounting booklet of rents paid by Samuel and Thomas Rankin and others to a Thomas Bateson of Londonberry, Irelandand others. Clues in the booklet suggest that a flour mill was being rented. At some point the account book was sent to the Wilson family of Rockbridge County, Virginia. The collection includes contemporary notes on the booklet as well as acquisition information.

Deeds for land owned by the Randolph Family (Richard Randolph, Jr., Thomas Mann Randolph, Thomas Jefferson Randolph), the Eppes Family (Francis Eppes, Richard Eppes, and William Eppes), and the Nicholas Family (John Nicholas, George Nicholas, and Robert Carter Nicholas.)
